map update did not go well

Up date 3597 to 2018.10 is a disaster. Never had a problem in the past with any up date. Unit shows 2018.10 installed. I downloaded to device only.

After up date map only shows major roads in yellow NO secondary roads can not navigate in simulator mode (tries but can't make turns) and green line showing my last several trips.

Tried to reset holding power button no help wonder if I can get a new update to computer or unit and that would fix things?

Anyone ever had a problem like this?

.

Plug it back in to Garmin Express, and re-install it.

fixed

I decided to re-install should have known something was wrong took almost 2 hours 1st time 32 min on re-install.

I did loose my icons and at first the simulator did not work. I reset with power button everything now works all roads and streets are back but still have some missing icons like home. That's not a big deal did not have that many anyway.

Thanks for your quick response I guess my real question was can you reload the 3597 maps from the computer? I never save them to computer since I don't use Base Camp.

Yes ..

... if you make a backup prior to updating, or have saved them to your PC using Express. If backed up you just copy the files back. If sent to your PC using Express you can then use MapInstall (which is what BaseCamp links to anyway) to install the map to your device. Note though that only installs the map, none of the other stuff like junction views.

Map problem

Had some problem installing the new maps.I was using the latest Garmin Express. To date have had no problems with Garmin Express on map update. When the maps were ready to install to the device I would get error of unable to install. Removed Garmin Express completely and try again with no luck.Removed Garmin Express again and rolled back to 4.1.28.0.Worked on the first try.

I`

I had the same problem with the latest version of GE. Downloaded to Computer and Device and the installation failed with the "Unable to Install" message.

Tried using the lastest version of MapUpdater and the update installed fine but I got an error message that although the maps were installed to the GPS they could not be installed on the computer.

Checked both my 3597 and Basecamp and the maps appear to be installed properly on both (Nuvi wasn't attached to the PC when I checked Basecamp).

Thanks for feedback.

Glad to hear I was not the only one. Googled it and didn't find any info that would help.Just thought rolling back the Express may work and it did.

Installed OK but...

While I had no problem installing it. the result is disappointing. Although the map file size is barely larger than the previous version, it is now very "skippy". Before, the GPS position was updating smoothly every 0.3 to 0.5 sec., the new version is very slow, locking up for 4 to 5 second before moving the car.
Anybody else noticed this?

I had that problem too

I was having those issues but then I reconnected the gps to the pc again and even though it said that I had the current map, I reinstalled it again. After that I tried it and all worked better. I think it depends on your connection and computer how well the download/install go. This was not the first time I had to reinstall a map (on my older GPS)

Just my insight on the matter...

Master reset.

Usually a master reset after an update will resolve those kinds of problems

poi's

I was under the impression a master reset will wipe out all saved data like POI's and routes.

Since I had never had a problem with updates in over 6 years I got lazy and not backed up my 3597 since my first update.

When this one went bad I kind of panic it looked like I had bricked my unit. Lucky for me a reload fixed things already completed a backup.

Really weird all roads were point to point (no curves) and vehicle unable to make turns.

I suspect Garmin has no error checking on map updates just down load and hope it goes OK.

saved places

It will take out your saved places or favorites.Just make a copy of your gpx file on the device before doing a master reset.

i agree with bobkz

That is what I did. I ran Garmin Express again. The second time the map installed properly.

Backup, reset

I agree that updates almost always go without incident. But it only takes one failure to make a real mess. I like to "play it safe" so I always make a backup before any update. As for master reset, it will clear the trip log, saved routes and favorites. There is no way to recover the trip log, but you can restore your routes and favorites if you back them up before the reset. Custom POI's are not affected by a master reset.

I have seen this before on saved routes and trips after a map update where saved routes or trips show strait lines between waypoints. It doesn't happen every time, but is not all that uncommon either. Again a system reset is the easiest way to fix it. You can also make a simple change to each route, save, reverse the change, resave and recalculate. I usually change the route from fastest to shortest, save, change back to fastest, resave and recalculate. Sounds complicated, but is real easy once you try it. But I still prefer the master reset method unless I absolutely need to keep my trip log for some reason.

Actually I think they do error checking (checksums, etc.). I don't think the problems you described are caused by a corrupt update. I think the device itself gets confused by the new map data because it doesn't exactly match the map that the route was created with. That is why a system reset or a resave/recalc fixes it.

Just my 2 cents, FWIW. In any case, I will continue to do a backup before updating, just to be safe.

Recalculate

garry1p wrote:

Often forcing a recalculation of the route will solve that particular problem. Unless of course what you were seeing was simply the basemap and either the new map hadn't downloaded or your device was just showing the basemap.

Thanks. I tried it but not much improvement. I noticed though that it changes quite a bit with different zoom levels. "Closer" views seem to increase the locking/skipping problem. Maybe my 765 device is getting too old for recent maps.

MAP UPDATE

I think that I will wait for the next update to download the map.May be the problem will be fix.

It looks slow than before.

It looks slow than before. not sure

Lazy and forgetful

Perhaps it's not such a bad thing that I've been lazy and forgetful and haven't yet installed the new maps. I've never used Garmin Express though. I still use the old map updater and it has worked perfectly for me every time.
