Went to Update GE today (From V 220.127.116.11 to V18.104.22.168)...and I got this Message:
(Path) GarminExpressInstaller.exe cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64 Bit versions of Windows.
Please contact the Software Vendor and ask if a 64 bit Windows Compatible version is available.
I'm not doing anything different than ever before!!!
I finally sent it as a bug to Garmin Folks...
The pending software update worked on 2689LMT, but still cannot update the GE Program.....
Anybody else seeing this?
I'm using windows 7 on this computer and loading was stopped.
"The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction" I have problems downloading updates everytime on this computer though.
I also installed it for the 1st time on my laptop using 64 bit windows 10 and it installed without a hitch.
I finally sent it as a bug to Garmin Folks...

Garmin Express 22.214.171.124 is installed on my Windows 7 64-bit PC. The computer is in top shape. I tried to update GE to 126.96.36.199 and it did not display any error message but hung. After 10 minutes I used Task Manager to close Garmin Express. Tried to restart the computer and it will not shut down. Used the reset button.
I recommend that members not update GE until the bug is fixed.
... updated on both my Win7 desktop and Win10 laptop without a hitch, so it's not a universal bug. May be something to do with particular systems so the Express team may have trouble tracking it down. Best bet for those with issues will be to call Garmin Support so they can if necessary look at your system in detail.

Went to Update GE today on W7-64 system (GE From V 188.8.131.52 to V184.108.40.206)...and I got this Message:
Installed it last weekend and all went well
I have Windows 10 w/32 bit and it installed with no problems
@JanJ ... I don't know if it will help, but one thing you could try is to download the Garmin Express installer directly instead of trying to use the update function from within your current copy of Garmin Express. I seem to recall that being a solution back in the days when Garmin Express had frequent install issues. I think this is the correct link: http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express-download.html#win

Prior to trying the link Alan posted, I tried again to update from the program, and when that failed (as before), I then tried to run the installer that was downloaded into Temp File as posted before.... That, Too Failed.....
Then I tried the link in alanb's post... THAT WORKED FINE!!!
Must have been something either in prior version code, or wrong file was downloaded by it during the update via program.....

I am glad that method worked for you JanJ. I posted back in the Garmin forum about your success so the folks over there having trouble can try the same thing. I suspect the Garmin Express team will address this issue when they return to work next week.
This sort of problems happened before. And once automatic update failed there was impossible to get it to work again.
One solution was to do, as alandb wrote above. But if you still will have problem with update try to uninstall current copy of GE, and they run fresh installation. Just remember to backup data from GE first if you have any.
I thought of this after fixing the issue....
I wonder if: I had deleted the installer file from the TEMP folder, if it would have then downloaded a good one?
Can't try it now.... but would have been interesting to try.....
I had the same problem.......what solved the problem for me was to remove GE (I used Revo-uninstaller) and reinstalled the updated version w/o problems.

windows10 64 bit all went well.
I found out today that you have to download garmin express on Microsoft edge, chrome or monzilla.i had problems yesterday it said my comp was not compatible. Tried Microsoft edge it worked
... Mine worked on IE11 ... so add that to the list
Other than that one time, which I feel was GE related, Firefox has worked flawlessly...
I downloaded the link directly and installed with no problems. I am on Win7 Pro on a HP Pavilion g7t-1100 CTO Notebook PC.
While reading here about some peps problems, I knew I didn't have a problem with the download thru GE.
Win 10 64 bit on desktop and Vista 32 bit on laptop.
I then checked GE and I last downloaded version 18.104.22.168
on both machines.
