Garmin nuvi 50 and Windows 8

I just bought a SanDisk 16GB microSDHC USS-I card. When plugged into the GARMIN Nuvi 50 and my PC (WINDOWS 8) it only shows 1.8GB available for use. It is FAT32

Does anyone know how to change it to be recognize > 2GB?

Thanks

New Or Used SD Card?

I don't understand how a newly purchased 16GB SD card would only show 1.8GB available. Did you purchase that SD card new or was it a used one from Ebay or Craigslist?

Why don't you check what files are on that SD card that is using so much space.

What is a USS-I card?

I think

I think he means UHS-1 card, not USS.

Here is an explanation:

I think that was a typo,probably is a 16GB UHS-I.

I do think it should work in the Nuvi since the Nuvi is recognizing it, but I don't know why it would only have 1.8 available space unless it was a used card.

I agree.

If the card was purchased on ebay at a great price from a Seller in China, beware.

Seeing only 1.8GB sounds a lot like it was FAT formatted rather than FAT32. It wouldn't hurt to reformat again to ensure it's FAT32.

I also suggest checking the card's capacity or contents with a PC's card reader, whether built into the PC or with a USB card reader, if the OP has one available. Also, try connecting the nuvi with SD card into a different USB port on the PC. It certainly could be a defective SD card. It seems unlikely to be a nuvi issue, but to check this, try another micro SD card in the nuvi.

Finally, try formatting the SD card with the downloadable SD Formatter program, and see if that helps. If the SD card has ever been used to root a tablet or some such device, it may have been partitioned such that only one 1.8GB partition can be accessed. This shouldn't be an issue if the SD card is truly brand new.

The nuvi 50 is new enough that this shouldn't be an issue, but it's worth checking (for this problem and other fixes for the GPS) to see that the nuvi has the latest firmware.

Re-format it

I would reformat it. If you bought it used there may be data on it already. If you bought it new, I would take it back for replacement.

h2testw

You can download the free SD card testing program named h2testw and test your card to see if it is authentic or a fake.

That must be it. I googled USS-I but the search hits don't help.

A test

Just to check, I tried to duplicate your findings but admittedly with a different model nuvi and different, slower speed SD card.

Windows 8.1 PC
nuvi 3597
Sandisk Class 4 16GB SD card

Whoops, the SD card had been one I used to root my Nook Color and as such, the PC showed only 148MB available due to the card's partitioning. (Hmm, and here I thought I had reformatted it when I stopped tinkering with my Nook redface ) I ran SD Formatter on the SD card with Format Size Adjustment set to On. That formatted the 16GB SD card to 14.8GB. Inserted into the nuvi, my Windows 8.1 saw the card correctly as a 14.8GB capacity card.

Conclusion: Assuming there's no issue we haven't discovered with your Class 10 speed or your use in a nuvi 50, and assuming that you've done what we've suggested above, my conclusion is that your SD card is defective.

If your "new" SD card is new and has nothing of importance on it, then running SD Formatter with Format Size Adjustment On will do no harm and may return your card to about 16GB.

Good luck and report back!

GOOD SUGGESTION ALAN

Until we here back from the OP we may just be speculating on what the problem is. I agree with the suggestion made to reformat the card.

I only own Sandisk cards and all were purchased on Ebay by carefully purchasing from buyers I've researched, I make it a policy not to buy from sellers in China, mostly to avoid the aggravation of a return should it be defective. There are many sellers on Ebay selling counterfeit cards so one must be careful.
I ALWAYS register my cards with Sandisk by providing the serial # which many times is difficult to see on the card. All my cards accepted the serial # so I imagine they are not counterfeit.
If you want to register your card click on the below link, create an account, then you can register your cards for warranty purposes.
