Public Safety Vs $$

A new bill appears to be a classic case of public safety versus the almighty dollar:

@Boxcar, won't the frequency spectrum allow for both? I'd value your insight on this.

cell phone industry spectrum-Hogging

Takeover of the radio spectrum by the cell phone industry and the endless building of towers has been surpassing epidemic levels for years! And why? So people can play Candy Crush Soda all day long!

Installation of WiFi on our roads would be a Herculean task and there is no need for it!

Edit - On the other hand it doesn't seem likely that Congress will be able to pass anything into law, much less this proposal!

In a word under the proposed rules, NO.

It isn't a "new" bill, it was passed in February 2012.

The proposed rules would allow unlicensed sites to transmit with a power level up to 200 watts of radiated power. (Now that is derived from the amount of input power to an antenna and the amount of amplification the antenna provides rather than a pure amount of power. It's complicated on how these figures are derived.)

The vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to roadside power limits are significantly lower. Using the distances or communications zones in the FCC rules for vehicles the typical amount of power used is about 2 thousands of a watt so you can see the unimaginable power difference. Our association did some studies and determined a typical home Wi-Fi unit operating on the twelfth floor of a highrise would overwhelm the safety messages from a car 10 miles away. A 200 W microwave site would wipe out communications over 90 miles away or even more if the microwave was on a mountain top instead of the normal 150-190 foot cell tower.

What does this really mean?

Lightsquared? Phantom Towers? V2V communications? There are now mystery towers that have sprung up along our major arteries that don't even have a publicly acknowledged name! Public safety? What rationalized nonsense. It's like the 1950's never happened ... & I'm sure for so many it never did.

I submit that anyone in possession of a vehicle w/o all this emitting radiation & electronic access from a far currently owns a vehicle that will become increasingly a collectors item, valued across the vehicle driving globe. wink

kind of burns me up

when we catch an employee using their 4G card and costing the co. $1,900/mo. (we have a share plan across the corporation but he used 160 gb)

One guy got caught watching **** and was fired (how much you bet he turns around and sues us?)

The mystery towers are

The mystery towers are probably the government fake cell towers for mass surveillance.

Interesting Issue....

Thanks for posting.
