I have not seen that Canadian RLCs have seen municipalities shortening the amber timing and other similar issues. I can only base this on my own experience in Waterloo Region, Ontario and an apparent lack of complaints from Canadian POI Factory members.

The Region is making a good buck, but many of the RLC intersections have count down timers, and the time seems reasonable. In addition, the local paper has a weekly column dedicated to traffic issues in the Region. The reporter is pretty thorough and I'm pretty sure he'd be having a heyday with the issue.

I'm curious about experiences, in other parts of Canada.

No yellow shortening here in Kelowna, from what I've noticed.

I haven't noticed a shortening of yellow in central Alberta.

What I HAVE started to see around here is a delay when the lights switch from red to green. It seems like there is a "two count" delay where the lights are red in all directions.

I have noticed this in several different towns, but this wasn't at intersections with RLCs. So I don't think the intent is to catch people anticipating a green light.

That's a feature that has been added all over. It's a safety feature that allows the light runners to clear the intersection before cross traffic is given the green.

Sometimes it seems that it should be 3 or 4 seconds. Never anticipate the green.

The minimum duration of yellow light is not arbitrary.

In California, they are specified by The California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (“MUTCD”) for Streets and Highways, in table 4d-102 (CA), page 4D-50, (FHWA’s MUTCD 2003 Edition, as amended for use in California), PART 4 Highway Traffic Signals.

Not talkin about yellow lights. Talking about the fact that a lot of lights now, delay by 2 or 3 seconds going green after cross traffic has received the red light. this delay has all four directions red for a short period of time to allow the intersection to clear before turning the next sequence green.
