Looking for advice on a new GPS>>>

Here's the deal...I stopped buying Garmin some years back because of their lousy routing and internal memory issues. I switched over to TomTom and have been quite happy with the routing and updating issues but, recently, the hardware started to crap out...as in, the screen is now switching by itself and, of course, at the most inconvenient times (Garmin hardware has been rock solid for me).

I would like to buy a new GPS that has the rock solid routing and updating capabilities of the TomTom and rock solid hardware of the Garmin...I have been browsing this site and many others for a few weeks and can't seem to find anything acceptable.

Any suggestions welcomed, please.

TIA, Ted

any unit

won't always perform to your expectations as there are ways that scream why did it do this when there is a better way. On the whole though, I have been quite happy with the way my 3597 performs. It has its quirks, the voice response is pretty poor but overall it works well for me. Your milage WILL vary.

No such thing....

All electronic devices and all software has its limitations and glitches.

Switching by itself ?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by that phrase, but it may be that you are describing a known issue with the older TomTom units that is often easily fixed.

What can happen over time is that grit, sand, or other debris can get under the bezel at the edge of the screen and lodge itself between the bezel and the screen in such a way that the GPS tends to think that the screen is being pressed even when it is not being touched.

This can often be cured by slipping a slim and medium soft object such as a credit card under the bezel and running it around the perimeter in an attempt to clean the "debris" out of the space between the screen and the bezel. It does not work every time, but the reported success rate is fairly high.

Several other suggestions also not working...I wish I had the ability to build the unit I want...I'd be an instant billionaire smile

Like others posted, it would

Like others posted, it would hard to find a unit that does everything well. If it existed, we would all be on it. I would just prioritize one's top most important must do well features and pick a unit that meets it.
