On the 2597 if you create a new category how do you tell the GPS what category a saved favorite or waypoint is supposed to go in. For example with my 855 I would load geocaches with EasyGPS and they would automatically appear on the map with the little treasure chest icon. With the 2597 they appear in the saved list but not on the map unless I assign an icon to each individual listing. Bottom line, I want to create a geocaching category, assign an icon for that category, and somehow tell the GPS to put the geocaches in that category. Unless I'm overlooking it, looking through the manual I can't find anything on how to do it. Possible or not?

Not Possible

According to these posts in the EasyGPS forums, it seems it isn't possible to assign categories:

   Transfer category when uploading to Garmin 1300?
   How to add categories with EasyGPS upload to Garmin?

Secondly, newer Nuvis do not support the little treasure chest icon assigned by EasyGPS.

I tried an EasyGPS test with my 2595 and the cache had the green heart icon. On my older 760, the cache had the little treasure chest icon.

I could live without the treasure chest icon, but what good is the ability to create a category if you can't assign things to it? I did create a geocaching category, but that's as far as I got.

I use categories a lot on my Nuvi, but for geocaching I use my tablet or smartphone with a couple of geocaching apps (CacheSense and c:geo).

Several years ago there was a paperless geocaching process that I used with my Nuvi. Custom POIs were used to store the caches. It doesn't seem to exist anymore... the process was something like this:

EasyGPS uses Saved Places (favourites) to store caches and while the Nuvi supports categories for them, the EasyGPS software doesn't seem to.

Maybe someone who uses paperless geocaching with their Nuvi could chime in...

There may be better caching software that I'm unaware of, but my favorite so far is CacheMagnet.
