Keeping The Windmill Alive - Your Last Trip? – May 2014

In danger of losing your windmill?

Maybe you can share the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you used it to seek out special places to go (like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.).

Anything to keep your windmill alive.

This thread will be closed on the last day of the month and a new one will be opened.

There are a lot of things to see and do in the San Antonio area. I will tell you the visiting the Alamo isn't necessarily one of them. The area around the Alamo has turned into one humungous cheap souvenir shop. Depending on how long you are going to be there, I'd opt for places such as Goliad where the Mexican Army was defeated or the Mexican Governor's Palace in downtown SA. Austin, with its horrible traffic is 50 miles up I-35 and Town Lake and the bats at sunset is quite a sight. Austin has a very good nightlife scene and lots of great places to eat.

There are a number of excellent places to dine in the SA area. There are many that do serve real Tex-Mex and a lot that put the label on some really poor offerings. One of my favorites is out Hwy 16 near Helotes called El Chaparral. Load your GPS with the Diners Drive-ins and Dives POI for a good selection of choices.

Lackland is on the west side of town, so for hotels, I'd look to the NW area for lodging. It won't be cheap, but there are some deals available between the two loops - I-410 and 1604. Check with the front desk at your hotel for both sightseeing and dining tips. One of my better questions for a front desk clerk is "Where would you go if...?" That makes it more personal.

going to north Texas in 2 weeks. I have worked out a route which is 40 minutes longer, but swings wide of Dallas keeping me on Texas highways instead of interstates.

First Air Show of the Season

Drove up to Manassas, VA for my first air show of the season. Also a good first road trip for the new Durango. Now all I have to do is figure out how to install my custom POIs to the in-car Nav unite - I've found instructions in several places (including here) but I can't seem to get it to load.
