Corrupt town exists solely as a speed trap

Unbelievable. Well, not really and that's the shame of it.

I remember them.....

But I haven't seen one in a l-o-n-g time was my point. At one time they were pretty common, especially approaching small towns and villages along the road.

They are probably viewed as "revenue reducers" now.

A Big Disadvantage of RADAR Detectors...

I have a book written probably 20 or so years ago by a retired NY State trooper called something like "How to Avoid A Speeding Ticket". In the chapter on RADAR, he mentions that when he polled his fellow troopers, much to his surprise he found that their opinion was unanimous: If you get stopped and you have a RADAR detector, you are getting a ticket. Period. Even people they would have been inclined to let go if the person had even a halfway decent excuse and acted nice were going to get a ticket if when the trooper got to the car he saw they had a RADAR detector.

Why? Because, regardless of why you really have one, having one in the first place implies that you speed often and at a speed well over the limit. You might not do so, but having a RADAR detector implies you do.

The author's conclusion was that most cops probably feel the same exact way.

Cheers,

Watching speed cameras & traps in the Washington, DC area - you know that the huge haul in tickets has become a larger portion of the "budget" over the last few years. Don't think it's going away soon.

If I'm not mistaken, DC never published what the threshold actually is. MD is very clear, 12 over, ticket, 11 over, no ticket.

I did 9 over in DC and never got a ticket. So I don't think DC is necessarily evil, just that they have the entire district covered.

Again, if you don't routinely break the law, you shouldn't have a problem with enforcement. Many here remind me of Alec Baldwin (always looking for trouble). He rides his bike backwards and it's the City's fault. Money grab, right?

no published threshold

You are right there is no published threshold for the District but it's zero tolerance on the books. 26 in a 25 could result in a ticket, but it depends on the time of day, the area, how the officer feels and of course the weather. A lot also depends on who you are as well. The former mayor and his police escort didn't get ticketed for riding bikes on the Clara Barton Parkway even though it is posted no bicycles - and they were photographed doing it by the US Park Police.

One or two notorious Florida speed traps may be ending

The City Council of Waldo, Florida voted last week to disband its police department and turn all law enforcement over to the county sheriff in the wake of a state investigation of its practices following a revolt by some police officers over an illegal ticket quota. The result of a state audit was going to compel the town to spend money updating police technology in ways the council felt the town could not afford. Whether the sheriff will alter the speed limits or signage or enforce the limits as strictly remains to be seen. Nearby notorious speed trap town Hampton, Florida also disbanded their police force earlier this year and is being investigated for skimming fraud involving ticket revenue.

Can the Sheriff's in FL change speed limits and/or signs?

In Pennsylvania only the town government (on non state roads) or the state DOT (on state roads) can do anything regarding limits and signage.

Yes

Tuckahoemike, your absolutely correct!

simple solition

If you have any doubt why they need RLCs then just read what cities are wailing about when they have to cut off RLC programs? Or even if they only are required to comply with minimum yellow timing. Is it road safety? Is it carnage on roads? No, it's loss of revenue from tickets. Some cities are so shameless that they put ticket money as part of their budget. And you may be sure that they do everything to get this money.
