Nuvi 3597 Map Update Conflict with Custom POI icons & Alerts?

Hello everyone, I have a nuvi 3597 and am a very basic user when it comes to custom POIs but I did manage to load a few ( shell stations, home depot, stuff like that) and have it working and icons and custom alerts showing up and working. UNTIL map update 2014.40. After I updated the map, none of my custom POI icons or proximity alerts worked or show on the GPS. Zoom level makes no difference. The POIs ARE loaded though, when I look at them on the GPS itself under where to/catagories.

I have tried reloading the map, reloading the POIs several times, even a factory reset. No luck. Just checking if anyone else is having this issue after the map update and is it possible for a map update to hose my icons and alerts? Oh, I also updated to latest software about teh same time that could have done it too.....

Thanks
Mike

Still no luck

Just a follow up, I re-installed the maps using Mapupdater rather than Garmin Express; it seemed to take a lot longer than using Express so I had some hopes for a difference but still no icons or proximity alerts. Can anyone tell me if proximity alerts are dependent on icons? In other words, if I have a speedway.csv and speedway.wav and speedway.bmp, the csv is showing up on my Nuvi. If the bmp is not showing up on the nuvi does that mean that the proximity alert is broken automatically or are they independent of each other. If it matters I have it set to alert at 2000 feet and like I said before it was all working before this latest map update. Thanks, Mike

I should responded to your original post with some questions earlier, but let me do so now.

I was unclear from your first post about the POI icons and alerts not working. Now I will ask for more information.

Why are you saying that .csv files and .bmp files are on your Nuvi? Do you have a directory on your Nuvi to which you point POI Loader when you generate the .gpi files that let icons and alerts be available on the Nuvi? I have never heard of anyone doing this although it should work.

My recommendation is to have folders on your computer that contain all of the POI files (.csv or .gpx) along with any ancillary .bmp files. Otherwise the nuvi will get very cluttered and may run out of space.

Please give some more information on what you do when you run POI Loader.

Hello and thanks for the

Hello and thanks for the reply, sorry I guess I was not very clear please excuse I am kind of new to POI files. I have a folder on my desktop called My POIs. WIthin that folder are subfolders, for example, one is Speedway, and one is Shell. Within the speedway folder I have speedway.csv, speedway.wav and speedway.bmp. Same thing for shell, within that folder I have shell.csv, shell.wav and shell.bmp. I have 9 folders total, each contains the csv and and a bitmap file, some do not have the sound file. I run POI loader in manual mode and for files with proximity alerts I use the distance setting, usually 2000 feet. I have sox.exe in the same directory as the Garmin POI loader and it runs ( I know that it is because Windows 7 security settings asks me if I want to run it) and this is how I have been dooing it. I can see the custom POIs ON on the Nuvi when I go to "where to" and categories but on the map, no luck seeing the icons or getting any proximity alerts.

@tafcam

What are the current setting for

Settings > Proximity Alerts
Audio
Alerts

Custom POI is checked

Take a look at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30396

It's John's tutorial on using POI Loader. It sounds as if something isn't quite right with your procedure but without a solid understanding of the loading procedure it is a little difficult to troubleshoot.

Will take a look, thanks

Will take a look, thanks funny thing is I am doing things exactly the same way before the map up date and it worked then. Or maybe the software update I think I did both at the same time

My icons are missing from the main map as well.

Well, I am having the same problem, except the icons show up on the map that appears when you select the "i" on a location listed in the category.

I have been using POI Loader just like I did on my 660.

POI-Factory Traffic Camera audible alert works.

tafkam - if you can edit your original post, you might want to add 3597 to the subject line. It might alert other 3597 owners of this problem.

updated thank you

updated thank you

3597 does show icons

Well, it seems that I had a BMP file problem when loading POIs.

Made a few new icons using internet images by converting them to 48 X 48 .bmp files (shows up better when zoomed out) using Corel Draw.

Checked on the way to and from work and they showed up while traveling the interstate - with or without a destination selected.

The icons do NOT show up when just panning around using your finger. When you are traveling, the icons do show up (if a location is close enough, of course).

A quick check to see if the icon is working is to select Categories, then select Custom POIs. Select the desired category and select one from the list. If you select the gray "i" tab, the unit will display a zoomed-in map location with the icon. No icon means it didn't load or there is some other problem. It just shows a blue square at the location, if the icon is not loaded.

Now I just need to make 48 X 48 .bmp files for all my POI files.

Partially working now

Most of my icons are 40x40 and there does not seem to be any pattern as to the ones that are not working. that being said I loaded a few totally new POIs ( best buy, dunkin donuts and tire discouinters) and they ARE working. Very strange, I thought I may have some corruption in the old files so I re-downloaded everthing from scratch and now the only one that is working that was working before is Home Depot. Oh, another new one, McDonalds, is NOT working. This is very strange.....but at least I know that it is possible to get custom POIs on there it is just a matter of getting ALL of them to work and I cannot find anything wrong with the ones that are not working, and again, they were working fine before the software/map update.

Any easy way to go back to the previous map?

Maybe this is a cure:

Had to attempt to install map before it recognized that there were updates available. Aborted that and code updates showed up

Installing now.

New map should not impact

New map should not impact custom POI. Did you try reboot the device?

Working now

Metric man thanks for the tip about looking at the icons under the custom cui section I had not thought of that. I used an older version of sox.exe as I read that the newer versions sometimes cause problems and after that everything is working again. I cannot say for sure weather the version of sox was the culprit but it is the only thing I did differently, other than toggling on and then back off the mtf mass storage settings. I have no idea what went wrong or now it got fixed but I don't really care it was driving me nuts! Thanks for everyone's help!!!!

Mike

Great!

Glad you got it working.
