How To Install Already Downloaded Maps

I've looked through the FAQs, but didn't see (or missed) this question. So, if it's there, please direct me to it.

I have 1 GPS and 2 PCs (Win7 & WinXP) both with BaseCamp installed. I use Map Updater to update the maps (I have read the other posts and already have V3.3.3 on both PCs).

Usually I download the new maps to both the GPS & 1 PC. Then, I download to the PC ONLY on the 2nd PC. But that's 2 downloads.

I know that I can check the option to leave the downloaded maps on the first PC, but that leads me to 2 questions:

1. Where on the 1st PC - what folder(s) - are the new maps found?

2. If I move/copy these folders/files to the other PC, how do I use them to update BaseCamp on the 2nd PC before deleting them?

I'm trying to avoid the time it takes for the 2nd download.

Thanks!

GMTK

Gary A, there is a utility by Javawa called GMTK that will move an installed map from one computer to another ... no need to redownload or reinstall. You can find it here: http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html.

I have not used this utility myself, but have read about it on other forums including the Groundspeak (geocaching) forum. Users seem to speak highly of the program.

I have used GMTK to move

I have used GMTK to move from a PC to laptop, but found the effort and time not to be time saving.

I just download the 2014.40 map to the laptop in 20-25 minutes. Not much of a savings for me to use GMTK again for that purpose.

But GMTK is nice to install multiple OSM maps.

Well This Is Embarrasing

redface I posted this question once before. Apparently, my senior moments are occurring more frequently.

I found the saved installation files (on my Win7 laptop) in C:\USERS\%username%\AppData\Local\Temp\IMG as was posted in that old topic.

So I could copy everything in that location to C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp\IMG on my WinXP PC, but then what? How do I install the maps for BaseCamp on this PC?

There is an installer file called CNNANT2014_40Update.msi that I could run. Has anyone tried running that?

I have never downloaded a map update. Can I download once to install on my 2 GPSrs?

Yes

Make sure you choose the Advance Option and choose to install to both computer and GPS for the first one. Then GPS only for the second one.

On my Winxp machine when I downloaded the maps to the computer it put the maps in C:\Documents and settings\All users\Application data\Garmin\Maps and MapSource found them automatically, so you may have the maps in the wrong place for Basecamp to find them.

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

Working

I got it to work, but in the end, it took just about as long.

Copying the large files between PCs took awhile and after running the msi it installed the maps in BaseCamp OK but they were locked. I then had to log into my Garmin online account to unlock them.

Turns out it is simpler to just download them again (depending on your internet speed of course). YMMV

MapUpdater - save to computer.

There are two optional settings in Garmin Map updater that save to the computer and they perform different functions and store files in different locations. One is "Save installation files", the other is "Install map to computer".

UpDater

One thing to note, Updater will not use the file downloaded by GE. It wants to download the whole thing again.

Yeah

Yeah, what I was asking about was "Save installation files" to the 1st PC, then copy those files to a 2nd PC in order to "Install map to computer" on the 2nd PC. Turns out, the time it takes to copy the files between PCs, install the maps on the 2nd PC and then log into MyGarmin to unlock the maps on the 2nd PC doesn't save much, if any, time. neutral

I'll just keep doing it the way I have in the past and download the maps to both PCs. I have a fast enough internet connection that it's not that big of a deal.
