Hello, Q about Kenwood/Garmin

Hello, just joined and thrilled to have found this site. I have a quick question. Does anyone have experience with Kenwood GPS (Garmin) car head units? The tutorial for loading POI's onto my GPS unit says that I need to connect the GPS device to a computer, but I cannot do that with my unit. It does however have a USB female connection. Is there a tutorial on how to load POI files using a USB?

My specific unit is the Kenwood DNX8120.

Thank you in advance for any input, greatly appreciated.

Laptop

Take your laptop and a usb cord out to the car. Then you can use POI loader to add POI files.

Here is a link to the Kenwood forums where you can find info on many subjects specific to your unit. http://www.kenwoodforums.com/index.php
You should be able to find exact instructions there

curious

I did notice the the OP mentioned he had a FEMALE USB port on the unit. So it would seem at first glance it would accept a USB memory stick. Otherwise he needs a male-to-male USB cable to connect to a laptop and then what....? If the unit was accessible to a PC he needs to transfer files.

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

Thank you.

I am looking into all of the suggestions and realize I am facing a bit of a learning curve with my unit. I'll be researching it online (like the Kenwood forum or the Kenwood and Garmin websites) over the next few days.

I did find out that I can use the SD slot on the device to load POI's, but that slot is occupied by my current 2014 map data set. The SD card needs to remain there for that Map Data to be useable, so the question is whether the POI data is loaded onto the device or if that also needs to remain in the slot for it to be useable. It would suck indeed if I cannot use the custom POI's and the updated Map at the same time (the internal map is 2009).

I just downloaded the Garmin POI Uploader and will test load a POI file tomorrow.

If it fails, I will look into connecting a computer or if I can do it with a USB stick...

Thanks again, and cheers.

Loading poi files to Kenwood

I have a dnn990hd which has the USB female as well, just download files to your PC,then plug your formatted USB stick into PC.Use poi loader and move files to USB stick.Safely remove USB and go to your Garmin and let it boot up fully, then plug USB stick into female cord from Garmin,it should see the files immediately and ask if if you want to install them.Say yes and they are very quickly installed to your Kenwood Garmin.Them remove stick and your done.these files stay in memory of unit until you update them or want to remove them.Is very simple procedure.i have so far not had to use the PC to add poi's.

Service Port

I know this thread was asking about adding POI's but in the past I believe these units had an actual "service port". I no longer think this is the case. With that port you could run the unit like a Nuvi in Mass Storage Mode which I don't think is possible anymore. Does anyone know of anyway to get these head units to act like a stand alone Nuvi and see the .System folder?

service port

I believe your correct on no service port,my previous DNX9960 had a extra port in the rear which needed a cable to go to glovebox for access to it.Worked fine my DNN990HD has a usb female for adding custom POI"s and this works just fine.
