2597

I finally decided, it was a tossup between the 3597 and the 2597 and the more I thought about it I decided I didn't need the extra features on the 3597. One of Garmin's tech support people I spoke to said for the money she thought the 2597 was a best buy.

It does have a mind of its own, we took a 110 mile trip Monday to visit our son and decided to try out the new improved voice directions. We always take the back roads to his place so I used Mapsource to lay out a custom route. All went well for the first forty miles until we were supposed to go onto a county road. At that point the GPS decided it wanted to take over and wanted me to stay on the main highway. it kept recalculating until we got to where we were going to get back on a main highway, then all was well again. My 855 did just the reverse of this one time. I had a route laid out where I was to take one main highway and was to turn on another main highway. The 855 took over and routed me onto a county road that ran between the two highways. I checked it on streets and trips later and found out the route it picked was a mile shorter and must have been faster also because that is the setting I use on all of my routes. I would prefer the way the 855 handled it. I'll have to go through the manual and see if I can change some settings on the 2597.

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

Avoidance

You could do a custom avoidance on the roads that you don't want to take. I do this on roads where I know there is construction. Be sure you check the route before you leave.
