What New Tomtom is Most Like My Go 720?

So, I'm taking a job in another city and want to get a second GPS unit for the car I'm taking with me. I don't want to move the 720 in the car I'm not taking, as it's got a mounting bracket and my wife knows how to use it.

Now, I create and use custom POI files for my 720, use Tyre to create custom routes and have done the whole voice recognition hack, so I'm going to assume that just picking a new Tomtom at random isn't going to make me happy.

I like the idea of the LIVE services, but don't want to lose the features I use now, like being able to add POI files, use it as an MP3 player (I'm using a 32GB MicroSD with adapter for all memory), etc.

Any advice, warnings, counsel or other input would be hugely appreciated. I might even consider the dark side (Garmin, etc), but would prefer not to have to learn a whole new ecosystem.

Mobile App

If you have an Android, have you considered the TomTom app?

Plus:
You can use your phone's music player. You add POIs like your 720. You get lifetime maps. You can add live traffic for a yearly fee. You don't need cellphone coverage (after the app and map are loaded).

Minus:
Not as many display options as your 720. Need to come up with a new holder (but there are many options).

Thanks...

As I have an iPhone and the TomTom app for iPhone still lacks the POI feature (when I checked), I went ahead and got a VIA 1605.

Pros:
Screen is easy to see.
Menus are faster and easier to use.
Traffic is a nice addition.

Cons:
My TomTom is no where near as easy to use and powerful as TomTom Home.
No root level access to device.
No music function.
Voice response icon, but voice response isn't activated (might be user error).

Suffice to say, if I didn't have Tyre to ease the process of managing POIs, I'd really be disappointed in this device. That said, I understand that some of the changes were driven by intellectual property issues and couldn't be avoided. I don't miss the Bluetooth functions (which never really worked right anyway) and I can understand why the music's gone too.

one also, agree with you assessment, did you notice the speed limit indicator with the bar at the bottom(lower left corner) is impossible to see? the only way you can see it is to move the bar to the side.

You have to uncheck the current time display for the speed limit indicator to be properly positioned.

So that's how you do it. I knew there was a reason I followed this site...I usually learn something useful. grin
