you must be zoomed in to 200 ft to see them

.

There are two different types of POIs/icons
1. Map embedded like restaurants, gas stations, etc.
2. User uploaded like redlight cameras, etc.

On the 34xx series, the map embedded POIs/icons can display at pretty much any zoom level. The nuvi decides what to display and for how long to display it/them. Criteria for this? I really can't say. They pop up & disappear at will, with no real rhyme no reason. If you see one on screen that you want more info on, you'd better press it quick because it may be gone just as quickly as it popped up. I suppose you can call this Garmin (il)Logic ®. rolleyes

User uploaded POIs are displayed differently between nuvi models. Some don't show them at all (nuvi 2x0), some are configurable by the GPS (nuvi 8x0/8x5 series). As a rule of thumb, you pretty much have to be zoomed way in to a pretty unusable zoom level (for driving) to see them. The zoom level can vary a bit between models but figure ~300ft or less zoom level.

Sticking with my old 765T has just meant that I spoke too quickly.

Have learned that the 8x0 series, the 8x5 series, the 900 and the 5000 all have the option in Tools > Settings > Map to "Show POIs" or not.

And, did not realize that the 2x0 series will not show POIs at all. Need to check this because Garmin makes this statement

Will my automotive device display POI icons on the map?
Answer:
Most automotive devices will only display icons on the map for your saved Favorites or custom Points of Interest (POI) files that you may have installed. To view the custom POI icons, you will need to zoom in the map to 200 feet or closer. The preloaded points of interest (restaurants, hotels, attractions, etc.) will not display icons on the map if they are not also saved favorites.

The device will show the POI icons on the map when it has started moving or is in an active route.

POI icons will NOT display on the map if your map view is set to either North Up or Track Up.

The zumo 350, dezl 760, and nuvi 2405, 2407, 2505, 2507, 2707, 3400, 3500, and 3507 series devices will only display POI icons when you have that map layer selected. For more information on map layers, view the article What are map layers and how do I use them on my automotive device?

and the models listed below this answer include
nuvi 200, nuvi 200W, nuvi 250, nuvi 250W,
nuvi 260, nuvi 260W, nuvi 270

which I usually interpret as meaning that the answer applies to them.

Those of you with 2x0 series, please weigh in.

See the following topic from 2008:

This user (dr5274) reports that POIs will NOT show on the nuvi 2x0 UNLESS you are in map panning mode (tap on the map) and zoomed in under 300 ft.

Having owned a nuvi 200 for a very short time when they were first released, I can vividly remember this. I also remember favorites not showing on the moving map either...ONLY in map panning mode. This was a total deal breaker for me and I believe it was the main reason I got rid of it so fast. mrgreen

My 295w

My 295w only shows Garmin's poi when in "Browse Map" mode. My own bmp icons show up at 200 zoom level, moving or browsing.

The more I read the less....

The more I read the less I understand. Lets go back to what Garmin says.

OK - I have a 765T and I can display
1. built-in POIs
2. Custom POIs
so my 765T must not be one of "Most automotive devices" if
"Most automotive devices" only display Favorites and Custom POIs.

I find this hard to believe so we need a show of hands. How many can turn on their automotive device, pan the map to somewhere near that will contain built-in POIs, zoom to 200 feet and tell us if you see built-ins like I do.

This part we have all been telling newcomers when they ask how to see Icons - and I agree based on my 765T

What in the world is displaying, then, on my 765T. The preloaded POIs show up as what appears to be "Icons" to me. Perhaps Garmin uses the term "Symbol" for what I call "Icon" but I see a "Best Buy" "TJ Maxx" "Captain Ds" which are certainly not category type symbols so I have to call them "Icons".

None of the symbols/icons just mentioned are either favorites or custom POIs on my unit.

I am in "Track up" map view sitting here at my computer.

Let's get some feedback on other series, please.
