I am able to turn off my c530 when connected to the PC. It then goes into charging mode.
I use the following steps:
1. I do use a security password
2. When connected to my PC, as the maps are loading I can hold down the on off button. Either then, or when it reaches the password screen, it will turn off. Screen says: Charging battery, press the Power Key to turn on.
Note: if you wait for the Password screen to turn on, it is to late and you will not be able to turn it off.

The C5xx series powers-off automatically, when you use the 'Safely Remove hardware' option. (At least up to firmware V5.4.0 it does).
Unlike the Nüvi 310, which reboots... I love Garmin's consistency

My Nuvi 660 powers off automatically when using "safely remove hardware" on my XP desktop, but it reboots after using "safely remove hardware" on my Vista Ultimate desktop...I'm rather fond of Micro$oft's consistency
