No Custom POI Shortcuts :-(

Well,

I think I've tried everything. Can't get to my Custom POIs via voice command and can't create a Shortcut to them either. I don't like how deep they are buried in my new 2595 menu. Has anyone found a way to get to them without having to press 6 buttons?

Not Possible

At least on my 2460LMT with voice command, only the favorites can be accessed by voice.

It seems the software was not written that enables it to have voice control of non-Garmin add on files.

What I did was to put an Extras icon on the main page so only 1 touch is required to access the Extras page. Makes things slightly easier, but far from ideal as it would be with voice control.

I'm not that familiar with the new units but on the older models you can access them from the Main Menu.

On the 800 series it's either "Where To" or "Main Menu" and then "Extras".

What is the process to place the "extras" icon on main page??

hack the OS

You need to hack the OS in order to do that.

Which nuvi?

Extras (and many other items) can be placed on the main menu screen for some nuvis but not all. Which model are you interested in? I've added Extras, like muell9k did, and Favorites to my 2460.

Here's a link for the 24xx series:

Believe CBellew Wants It For 3590

Not sure if the 3590 has that capability, since it's newer than our 2460, Garmin has the tendency to remove desirable features.

My Main page of the 2460LMT consists of:
Where To,View Map,Tools,Display,Volume,Extras,Favorites,Stop, and Navigation.

Garmin is something else.

Garmin is something else. Every series of gps units are different. Some have buttons, some don't some have dashborads some don't. On and on ....You have to be careful on which one you choose and have to sort your priorities out.
I just bout a Dezl 760. I was thinking of the 2797 which has the same housing but just does Automobile mode and is $100 cheaper. It doesn't have the Buttons and the Dashboard options like the Dezl so even though I don't use the Trucking end I bought the Dezl because of the Main map side buttons and the dashboard options.

I have a Nuvi 3590LM. I

I have a Nuvi 3590LM. I love the customer POIs I receive here. However, it is almost useless when traveling to go through the many levels to get to the customer POIs.

Agreed

The custom POI menu item is buried pretty deeply and to top it off, you cannot create a shortcut to them like you can to the others. I believe this will be resolved with a "unit update" (buy a new unit) rather than a firmware update, then will later be removed from the unit and placed into Garmin's "feature pool" which they can again pull from and add to a new unit as a "new feature". This has been going on for years now. rolleyes

You buy a new unit and chances are good that a well-used feature you are used to will be removed.

Consistancy?

Having every model have a different feel to the menus is something that that is not good. Motorola learned the hard way that people are less likely to upgrade a cell phone when they have to learn a whole new interface. Now, maybe Microsoft will quit doing it - NOT!

Where To? > Custom POIs

Perhaps you can expand on your comments about levels.

According to page 73 of your manual, under the Heading "Finding Extras", it says
1. Where To? > Custom POIs
2. Select a category.

When you get to Custom POIs, what are you seeing?

I don't believe the issue is accessing the custom POIs but rather the inability to create a shortcut to them as you can do with all other categories. They are buried deep within the "Where To" menu.

For example with NO shortcut:

Where To
Categories
(down arrow 3 times)
Custom POIs
Redlight-Cameras
(Redlight Camera list)

Searching *with* a created shortcut:

Where To
Target (shortcut created for Target Stores)
(Target Stores list)

@Dorkus

I guess I was misunderstanding what the problem was. Of course, my experience is limited to a 765T and I would have to tap Where To? > [down arrow] > Extras > Custom POIs > {Stores} > {Target} > (Target Stores List) to pick a particular location.

CBellew's manual fooled me because it did not indicate it was Where To? > [down arrow]> [down arrow] > [down arrow] > Custom POIs. To me is sounded like just two taps.

In fact, it might include, I suppose, a category called "Extras", because that is what he was wanting to put on the main page.

But - because he used to word "useless" it struck me as his not having used "categories" when he loaded his Custom POIs to avoid more scrolling to get to Target, for example, if he had had a category called "Stores" to restrict the search. I load around 50 files bu have then reduces to 5 categories to simplify taps.

On my unit, I may have to tap several times, but being able to find the nearest "Batteries Plus" if my laptop battery dies while I am on a trip would justify those taps.

I wonder what he really meant when CBellew said "useless".

Same With 2555

I have the same issue with my new 2555.

I went to Garmin Ideas and suggested that they allow Custom POI tp be added or to allow you to have an up arrow that would allow you to scroll backwards and loop around to Custom POI.

Maybe we all have to start pressuring Garmin and innpndate them with emails.

You have to push Categories and not allowed to add as shortcut

This is one of those things Garmin does that makes no sense

Having a shortcut to your favorites is something we all are asking for, but for some reason they seem to think we don't need it.

The handheld units let you do this, so it must be two different groups working there, and they don't talk to each other.

No way to create a shortcut

The problem of "mining" deep into categories to find the custom POIs is why Garmin is loosing the map war, in my opinion. If they could make the units more user friendly, then loyal followers would continue using the Garmin. As it is, one can find your location just as easy or quicker using a smart phone or Ipad. I will continue using my Garmin on a limited basis, such as long trips. I will continue to update my POIs from POI factory. But using the custom POIs will be hard to do.

Thanks to everyone for your answers. The final answer is as it stand today, there is no way to create a shortcut to the main menu for custom POIs.

Favorites or Extras

@donbadabon, did you mean to say "Extras"? Or, were you wanting the heart icon for "Favorites" to appear on the main screen with "Where To?" on your 1490?

Has To Be Extras

Looking at the Gramin manual for the 1490 the "Favorites" appear on the first screen when hitting the Where To icon.
Looks like you have to hit the down arrow at least once to get to "Extras".
