Europe Maps and POIs

We are going to Italy next month and just ordered the Garmin Europe maps on DVD (yes I know they are almost a year old). I was planning on putting the the maps on my SD card. Has anyone experienced any problems with maps on both the unit (nuvi in my case) and the SD card?

Also has anyone had any experience with the POIs from the "GPS data team"? They do have a small charge (one time) for expanded POIs. Their files look pretty small so I was wondering if the Garmin POI files would sufice. Any insights as to the need for removing the POIs I now have on my unit for NA and placing the Europe POIs onto the SD card with the maps? My guess is that there may be a conflict between the two.

As always thanks

Don

I assume you mean NA maps on device and EU on card? I have this combination in my 770 and there never was a problem. Problems arise only when you have maps that cover this same area and are active at this same time. Maps for different areas don't make any problems.

From my experience Garmin's POI files are - gently speaking - not good. They are not really checking if POI is still existing, so you can have "ghost" locations. There was problem in some map releases, that they duplicated POIs. So trusting POI delivered with maps can be tricky.

I can't say anything about "GPS data team" and their POIs. But can tell you this: look for free POIs on internet. They are usually compiled by hobbyists and are the most accurate, as they usually get fix with GPS at POI locations.

On the other hand if you would use search option for this very forum you will find that there was discussion about Italy already. Like here:

Thanks grzesja

Thanks for responding. I already knew about the files at the factory, but was also looking for more out of the way POIs like in Sicily, Sardinia, Puglia etc. Seached the internet and got a number of sites that include Italy, but wanted to know if any of the members here had any experiece with any of them.

Thanks again

SD CARD

If you have trouble installing on SD card, You may have to make a Directory called: Garmin:.
Copy the Gmapsupp file into that directory.
reboot your garmin
select tools select map select map info and hilight the map you wish to use.
I will see you in Rome near the end of April.

Thanks, I had no problems gettin g the maps onto the SD card. What did happen was the that when I loaded the Italy custom POI files the loader did not overwrite the ones I had for the US. I'll be in Rome starting May 8th then on the road into Puglia, Basilicata and then the Amalfi coast. I'll be the guy with a beard and a Garmin nuvi....See ya there!

my 770

My 770 comes with both NA and EU maps in GPSr device. No need for SD though you can do so. I turned on Europe map when I went there. Rest of time, I leave it off.

With the current maps, the 770 memory is too small to host both the North America and the Europe maps. So if you want to update your map(s), you'll need to place one on the SD card. This actually works to your advantage as it is much faster to take the SD card into a cheap memory card reader and load one of the new maps (Europe being the largest) into the Garmin Folder of the SD card using USB 2.0 instead of the USB 1.0 sloooow loading you get through the 770 itself.
