Thanks

Just grabbed that. I was hoping it would change some more stuff. So much easier to get into my Custom poi's with my 3790 and to change map symbols. 3590 you need to go to "where to" then Categories and scroll almost all the way down to "other categories". 3790 you just go "where to" and down to extras. Still haven't figured out how to change the map symbol on the saved favorites or custom poi's if that can even be done?

Same on the 3490 and you can't create a shortcut to "other categories" as you can with virtually everything else within that list.

The more i play with this one, the more I think I might sell it and keep my 3790. I really like the idea of being able to change the Map symbols on board. Creating a shortcut for Other Categories should be an easy fix for Garmin, one would think

Just took the plunge.

So far, everything look good on my 3490.

I agree with the comparison of the 3490, 3590 and the 3790

I had compared the 3490 to the 3790 when I was looking and after a thorough comparison I felt the 3790 actually offered more of the features I liked that had been dropped in the 3490 including more detailed maps. That made the $150 price for the 3790LMT even more of a no brainer for me.

I did buy it by mistake, misread the price, had two windows opened from gps central. 3790 and 3590. I ended up some how buying another 3790. Couldn't get out of it except for buying the 3590 at a much higher price. It's ok though. I'm one up on juggernaut. He did say way back when, he wasn't going to get a 3790 cause his 775 works fine. That lasted about 3 weeks and he went out and bought it. laugh out loud

Vague

I love it when companies add to their release notes:

Improved software stability

Pretty vague and makes you wonder what and how many fixes were really involved. Either there's too many to list or they don't think you need to know every module that has changed I guess. This goes for various vendors - not just Garmin. Anyway, always makes me wonder what was really done and if they screwed up something by fixing another. Let the consumer be the beta testers!

Actually, I bought my 3790 October 15th last year in the Prince George Costco, so it was far more than '3 weeks' later. Of course, no need to let facts get in the way of a good story though. wink

Hope it will fix the "auto restart" problem.

One thing i noticed with this 3590lmt compared to my 3790lmt concerning updates, is the reboot behavior.
The 3790 shows a little blue thingy on the screen flashing, think it says updating. The 3590 is just black no sign of anything going on. When all is said and done the 3590 goes through the boot screen. One could think its frozen and unplug it or keep pushing the on off button, that could cause some grief. I definitely like the way 3790 behaves. I wouldn't be surprised if all the 2012 garmins behave like that.

Works for me on 3490

Installed on my 3490LMT without a problem. Have not noticed any abnormal operation but haven't done much with it. Didn't notice any visual changes.

Maps seem sharper? (and other observations) 2595 LMT

It may be just my imagination (or my eyes are getting BETTER instead of WORSE) but it really seems like the maps have become sharper with both this release and the previous. It really seems better in the junction views, where the detail is much finer now. I really believe Garmin has tweeked the firmware to make the screen images sharper or have given them better contrast.

With this release there was a big change: the display now shows the street you are on instead of the next upcoming street when you're not navigating. Personally I like this better.

I also noticed that the map shows more side street names along the route now. Previously, it would usually show only street names on the opposite side from which you were travelling. I am now seeing most streets on BOTH sides of the road.

--
"Primum Non Nocere" 2595LMT Clear Channel and Navteq Traffic

No problems

Installation went without a hitch. Really have not seen any difference in the sharpness. Will have to check again about it showing more street names.

--
ChefDon

I think the biggest

I think the biggest difference was the change from displaying the next upcoming street to the current street you are on. Since I normally have my unit set to "Germany", I reset it back to the U.S. and confirmed it displays the same way.

It is also WAY more generous with the side street names along the route after this FW update.

Sounds Good

williston wrote:

That's good to know. I personally haven't updated firmware or the maps in about a year and was worried to update especially after the whole lane assist issue which I'm not sure has changed back in the previous map update (but that's for another post).

New firmware locked up 3590

On my first experience with the update the GPS locked up (screen freeze) at about 25 miles. It was not in navigation mode at the time.
I held the start button down until it rebooted.

Lockup has never occurred before on the 3590. It was however a constant issue with a 1490.

Bob,

Backup your stuff and reset(thumb bottom right hand corner) the unit. My 3590 is working without problems

Re: Lane assist I can report

Re: Lane assist

I can report that the little lane assist arrows at the top left of the display are acting like they did when I first got the unit; i.e.: the arrows show the lane to be in even if the exit is 50 miles away. I have never noted any issues with the junction view images.

Noticed the side street names better to but not the screen being sharper

williston wrote:

Mine is set to the US locale (I don't use any other) and the unit displays upcoming cross-streets in the green bar when NOT navigating a route, just like it did when I first got it.

I believe this behavior is now auto-sensing...depending on where you are (like a sparse area), I believe the unit will display the road you're currently on if there are no nearby cross streets to display.

That's good to hear although I thought the lane assist feature was effected by the map update itself versus the firmware update but apparently that's not the case. I guess the map update is just the data versus the firmware which controls how it's to be displayed. I was afraid to update because I didn't want to lose the ability to see that info way in advance.

Thanks for the info.

oops! :^}

Thinking it over, you may be right about the map update being the variable on how the lane-assist arrows were working and not the FW update. (oops). Re: the cross street vs. current street display: I'll pay closer attention and report back on whether it varies according to whether or not you are in the boonies or a densely populated area. What I can say is that I noticed almost immediately when I fired it up after the FW update and took it for a ride.

Either way, it works like it used to and you have both the latest firmware and the latest maps installed correct? [I'm using the 3490LMT.]

Garmin reduced lane assist data in the 2013.20 maps, then firmware 7.20 reduced the display of the LA data (compared to FW 7.10). With the latest FW 7.50, the LA display is restored to what it was with FW 7.10.

So eventhough FW 7.50 brings LA back to what FW 7.10 was, the 2013.20/30 maps STILL reduces the LA info compared to 2013.10. Is this because they are now using more JV's instead of LA or are they just removing this data in an effort to conserve space to fit the new map updates onto the units?

Curious...
