Black Friday / Cyber Monday - 2012

Thanksgiving is on the radar now, and I've started thinking about shopping for some holiday deals. So, I figure it's about time to start up the yearly thread for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Any great deals you find interesting are fair game. It's okay to go beyond GPS and to chat about items you hope to find. (This year, I'm looking to snag deals on a ~40" TV and a garage door opener smile )

Let's use this thread up to Cyber Monday, and then I'll start another one for December Holidays.

bfads.net is a great site to see all the ads when they become available.

Also, be sure to check out the Hot Deals section. These are usually 1 day only type deals and that section is updated all year long.

Thanks for the tip. BFADS looks like a really good site for keeping up with what stores are planning.

Another "hot deals" type site, with daily info on 1 day only type sales, is www.techbargains.com. I sometimes check in with them when I'm in the mood to browse. They run all year long.

A good find.

Note that the nuvi 50LM (shown on page 1) does not state whether it's the Lower 48 map version or the USA and Canada version, even after clicking it to go to the actual item description. For those thinking of buying, I'd check the item in the store before buying one. Most folks will want the USA and Canada version.

thanks

always good to have ways to keep track of deals with the economy so bad.

The one listed for $179.99 is the Etrex 20. What am I missing?

I got a good deal on a 50LM but came to find out later ther's a US/Canada version and I got the lower 48 version.

Not a huge deal for me, but annoying, esp. when on Amazon the US/Canada version was $10 cheaper than the lower 48.

Ignorance cost me that day.

Costco Camera Deal (DSLR)

Lately, I have been seeing a Canon 7D that comes with a zoom lens (28mm to 135) and a flash for $1799. You can find the camera for around $1399 body only but if you add the lens and flash, that is not a bad deal. The 7D is a really nice DSLR.

The 7D is nice, but is getting old. It's by no means guaranteed, but I would expect it to be replaced early 2013. (I plan to order it as soon as it's available.)

In general, I am not impressed with Black Friday stuff this year. I was hoping to replace my GPS navigator, but haven't spotted any deal worth grabbing for me yet. I want a mid-to-high-end unit with lifetime maps and traffic.

A Brief 2013 Canon Roadmap

What’s in the pipeline

EOS
Two new DSLRs will be coming in the first quarter of 2013. Most likely APS-C cameras. Definitely a Rebel and most likely one of the 70D or 7D Mark II.

EOS-M
New lenses in Q1 of 2013 will be announced. Expect a fast prime and a telephoto lens. No mentions of a new EOS-M camera. We’re all hoping for a firmware update to improve the AF of the EOS-M.

The Big Megapixel Camera
They’re out there, announcement is unknown. It is definitely 40+ mp and will be geared to studio and landscape photographers. Apparently there’s lots of new technology in this upcoming body.

I am staying home.

I don't plan on shopping on black Friday this year at all.

Too many people. Too many fake ads, where they know full well they will be out of those by the time I get the. Waste of time.

2555LMT refurbished $119.99

Compusa/Tiger direct flier in todays papaer lists refurbished 2555 LMT for 119.99.

Am normally leery of "refurbished" but picked up my "refurbished" 1490T several years ago and could not tell it from new. Pristine condition and no problems to date. Perhaps I got lucky, but would try again.

same as last year?

Thought this was an interesting post on Gizmodo. A sign of the bad/recovering economy?

Black Friday starting on Thursday???

Is is just me, or does anyone else think it's a bit extreme that some stores are beginning "Black Friday" at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day!!?? So, how does one of those employees say to their boss, "no, I'd rather spend Thanksgiving with my family instead of working at your money-grubbing store!"

I don't know how.

Jobs are hard to find these days. That's what the gals at my local Walmart tell me.

Stay at home for me.

From my past experience, deals for black Friday are not worth the effort. If you shopping for major electronics, do your homework online then other brick & mortal retailers will match it for you. (best buy, fry's, walmart)

With a couple of exceptions most manufacturers refurbished stock is just as good as new. You gotta have pride, standards, right? If I were a manufacturer and was selling stuff with my name on it things would have to be right.

Exceptions being Sharp appliances, and Hamilton Beach appliances. I have bought both of those refurbished and had an inordinate amount of trouble. Sharp wouldn't address it on a microwave oven. Hamilton Beach was obviously aware of the issue and were still trying to sell off their defective stuff. Low standards.

But I have bought Garmin refurbished. Can't tell it from new.

There is also another way to look at it. If the refurbished product gets shipped to Canada it needs to have at least one year warranty by Law. If you were a manufacturer, would you go through the trouble and separate what goes to the USA and what goes to Canada? lol, yep i would...CSA sticker
