Garmin Nuvi 360 won't see/accept City Navigator Europe SD card

Going to UK in a week, bought a new SD City Navigator card and it won't be seen by my Nuvi 360, which I bought used. Battery low but not dead, no USB/computer cable, only cigar lighter charger. All help appreciated. Thanks, Fred

MapInfo

After inserting the card and firing up the 360, have you gone to the MapInfo page and unchecked the built-in map and checked the map of Europe?

Welcome to The Factory. If the above doesn't help, report back and we'll try some other things.

.

The 360 should also see any MP3s that reside on the SD Card. If you can (and have access to one), try another card with a few MP3s on it. If the nuvi won't see the MP3s on the test card, the card reader on the nuvi itself may be damaged.

Note: If testing another SD Card, the SD card should be formatted in a FAT or FAT32 format. A 2 GB or less card can be formatted in FAT or FAT32. Anything larger than a 2 GB should be formatted in FAT32.

Nuvi 360

Only the builtin map appears, unchecking it does not do anything. Thanks, Fred. What I did do this am in desperation was go out and buy a Craigslist Nuvi 255, tried it before taking it and as it had only a micro SD slot I separated the tiny card from its adapter and it worked. However, upon returning from UK I will still try to get my 360 Nuvi to accept the card. So, please suggest more possibilities. Thanks

Ah, if the map shows on a different nuvi, then it's most likely an issue with the 360, maybe simply a filmed over or slightly corroded contact on the SD slot in the 360. With the 360 off, you could "exercise" it a bit by inserting and removing the card a few times, then leave it in, power it up and see if the map appears as we hope. You could also "exercise" the micro SD card in its full-size SD adapter for the same reason.

The other possibility may be that the nuvi 360 has ancient firmware and needs a firmware update to accept the SD card with the European map. But to update the firmware (either with the recommeded WebUpdater or with the myGarmin web site), you need a USB cable to connect the nuvi to your computer--and you said at first that you don't have the cable.

Map Size May Be The Problem

I don't know what version of Europe SD card you bought, but if it's larger than 2GB your 360 can't read it since it can only read maps up to 2GB.
The full Euro Map is about 2.62MB.

If it's over 2GB, I'm sure if you try the card in a newer Nuvi it will recognize it.

"The latest version of the Garmin City Navigator NT Maps of UK, Western and Eastern Europe microSD,SD card is not compatible with the Garmin nuvi 360. This is because the file size of the map data now exceeds the 2GB maximum that your device can read. You can however purchase individual regions, such as UK and Ireland, France and Benelux and Spain and Portugal from the list below to install and use the latest maps for UK and all other parts of Europe."

Your nuvi 360 not compatible with full Europe maps

From the Garmin Knowledgebase:

Why are certain devices not compatible with City Navigator Europe NT 2011.30 or newer mapping?

Question: Why are certain devices not compatible with City Navigator Europe NT 2011.30 or newer mapping?
Answer:
Starting with the 2011.30 version of City Navigator Europe NT, the map file size for all of Europe is now larger than 2GB in size. The following is a list of Garmin's older model devices that support an SD card larger than 4GB but are not able to use a map file that is larger than 2GB.

nuvi 300 Series
nuvi 600 Series
nuvi 5000
StreetPilot c500 Series
OEM Zumo Series
These devices will not be able to use the following products:

Full Coverage City Navigator Europe pre-programmed card
Full Coverage City Navigator Europe Download
Full Coverage City Navigator Europe Map Update
A map file larger than 2GB loaded from MapSource or MapInstall

Wow, that's great to know. The Factory continues to be the best overall pleasant source of answers for all Garmin questions!

It looks like the OP needs to keep his 255 now.

Nuvi 360

These are both likely sounding fix possibilities and I will certainly try them. For now, as time is short, I am deeply into planning/packing/putting house and yard in order. Will try these upon return. Thanks very much for your kind help. Fred

Have A Good Time

Fred,
For sure your 360 won't ever read a map over 2GB.
Luckily you bought the Craigslist 255 and will be able to use it in Europe.

Have a memorable vacation and a safe trip home.

Nuvi 2460LMT 2 Units

Point of Clarification

As a point of clarification regarding the full coverage download and update not working on the listed units, the reason why it doesn't work is twofold:

  • The 2GB limit on map size.
  • The SD card only supports one map image file, named gmapsupp.img.

Thus, because you can only have one working map image on a SD card in these devices, and that map image cannot be larger than 2GB, it's impossible to install all 2.6GB+ of Europe on the SD card. The only way to get around that issue without the inconvenience of renaming map images so the nüvi can see them is to backup the existing map on the internal memory and install the reminder of Europe in place of the existing map.

This obviously won't help the OP since he purchased the SD card map. So he's going to have to bring his 255 with him to Europe instead of the 360.
