Texas: Red Light Camera Firm Sues to Block Public Vote

A traffic camera company on Thursday filed suit in a Galveston County, Texas courthouse to prevent voters from having a say in whether automated ticketing machines are used in League City. Following a well-established pattern, Redflex Traffic Systems, which wants the camera program to survive, filed suit against the city asking the court to block officials from going ahead with the initiative on the November 6 ballot. City officials also support the cameras.

Why Not!

Might as well give the lawyers something to do and make more money. These poor guys need the cash.

And Sometimes it's time for a revolution!

Aren't politicians predictable?

Its all about the money

The city and rlc firm see the potential for lost revenue. They will do what they have to in order to keep the funds.

$$$

There must be an awful lot of money at stake. These cameras get placed under the guise of public safety, but soon they put up more and more as the city, prodded by the private camera companies, gets addicted to the new revenue stream. In any case, "public works" like these shouldn't be disallowed from voter referendum. When voters see corruption, they should be allowed to act to remove it.

My thoughts exactly

My thoughts exactly, When a private party has a moneyed interest in collecting fines, corruption will follow shortly! They, the private companies test and calibrate the cams, does the Gov check the testing/calabration data?

corruption

Private parties have a lot of vested interests. Is it somehow better if it's a public entity? Do you have a vested interest in your job, whatever it may be? Does that make you corrupt?

GOI

We should all get over it and put our efforts and discussion into something meaningful...

typical corruption

make up a plausible but false story (in this case public safety). convince some of the population of that the story really is true, which it is not. take in lots of money from the citizens and share it with there friends.

our government at work at all levels. government for the government employees, by the government employees. citizens are a resource to be stolen from.

vote

Whenever we're not allowed to vote, it feels more like a dictatorship than a democracy.

It's not a democracy

It's a Republic. You did vote (or should have) - in the election that elected the legislators who passed the RLC law. For the most part, the general public isn't asked to vote on each and every law that is enacted, yet some people feel their rights are violated if they can't vote against a specific law they disagree with.

If you buy stuff, (and who doesn't) you pay taxes, and if you have a job, you pay into FICA. And before you argue that FICA ain't tax, well, if you die before retirement age then you're SOL, amiright?

Interesting, where did you get this data?

What taxes are you talking about (income, federal, state, local, sales)?

The figure is closer to 42% of the population does not pay federal income tax. That doesn't mean taxes are not taken from their income, it just means that approximately 42% of the population doesn't pay income tax.

have read it but did not recall what percent of taxpayers paid no federal income tax but over 50% was not it.

Looked quickly for what the number was but did not find it. Found that the bottom 50% earned 13% of income and paid 2% of federal income taxes.

In an op-ed

The elected officials decided to let the people vote to remove the cameras (or not). The Red Light camera firm like to keep everything the way it is now.
