Official Garmin API for Communication Between Third Party Websites and Garmin GPS Devices

Check the official Garmin Press release. Looks like we should soon have a bunch of web tools. Already have Google Map interface. Also of note is a mention of "secure" POIs?

This may have a huge impact on this web site if others plan to profit from the sales of "secure" POIs!!

Secure POI's

Garmin have been making use of this internally for a while. They sell a 'Safety Camera' database in Europe, that is locked to a unit serial number. It also provides access to some features that are not otherwise available (like directional alerts).

I wait with bated breath, for Garmin's response to my request for access to their "Content toolkit" - if nothing else, the ability to bypass POI Loader, would be worth its weight in gold ;-)

We are pretty excited about this new tool and are researching it right now.

kch50428 started a discussion thread on this yesterday with more info on installation and testing. (see the related link I've added above)

Direct Transfer to GPS

The communicator plugin's direct transfer feature (from web site to GPS) would really simplify the POI installation process. Newcomers sometimes get hung up with the many steps required to download and install with POI loader. This could eliminate a lot of the issues.

Check out the tool below which allows you to read and write gpx files. Looks like it uses the Nuvi favorites and NOT custom POIs. It works fine detecting and reading Favorites from my Nuvi 350. I did try the write option since I was not sure if it merges.

Looks to me with just a little bit of javascript one can import gpx files.
