Experience With Tele-Marketers

My favorite personal experience was when this man called to tell me how much money I could save on my mortgage if I changed over to his company. (mispronouncing my name a few times along the way). He told me all about the options his company could provide. So, I let him ask me questions - nothing really personal - not for several minutes.

A few times, I asked questions back and received answers. Some of those answers weren't very accurate (mental note - don't do business if the caller doesn't know what he's talking about).

I was not really believing that it took that long, but after several minutes of his sales pitch, I was playing along now to just see how long this call would go. It was just about the 14 minute mark when he finally asked me how much I was paying on my mortgage and he would be able to tell me how much I could save. He knew he had a sale now!

When I answered, "I don't have a mortgage, it's paid off", I think it only took a fraction of a second for him to slam the phone down. I heard a bit of something he uttered as he did this, but I couldn't quite make it out. It sounded like something I wouldn't want to write here.

Usually, I'd just answer that I Rent or that I'm just a visitor answering the phone while the owner is busy and can't talk right now, or that I'm happy with my current mortgage. (OK, maybe happy isn't the right word, but at least satisfied).

Political call-outs are not subject to the DNR. Nice, huh?

No, it's not.

The Do-Not-Call registry does not prevent all unwanted calls. It does not cover the following:

calls from organizations with which you have established a business relationship;
calls for which you have given prior written permission;
calls which are not commercial or do not include unsolicited advertisements;
calls by or on behalf of tax-exempt non-profit organizations.

I know all that... I was saying it's not nice they are exempt. The ruling class exempting themselves from that which they inflict upon everyone but themselves.

Loopholes

Loopholes allow companies to circumvent the Do Not Call. Better yet is let them speak and see if they have a way for your number to be deleted from their call list.

They just keep calling anyway

Even if you ask to be put on their DNC list, or hit the # key that is supposed to discontinue their calls, they keep calling anyway. I'm tired of Michelle from the credit card company calling me to lower my interest rates.

Callcentric

I switched to CallCentric VOIP a few months ago. They have an option to create rules for incoming calls. So any telemarketers that call now after their first call receive a number disconnected message.

The FCC

The FCC has obviously stopped enforcing the Do Not Call list. If they're not going to go after the callers, why bother. The callers ignore it.

Maybe.

I routinely submit a complaint on the FCC website whenever I get these calls. Some of them have stopped calling, but maybe it is just coincidental.

Free Stuff?

I especially like the ones that tell me I will get something free just for talking to them. If I feel like it, I talk to them for about 90 seconds.

So far I've never received anything.

My favorite is one I heard

My favorite is one I heard on the radio so I tried it.
Having a little time on my hands relaxing the call came in.
I listened for several minutes answering the ice breaking questions.
Then said hold on my son just got home form school.
I put the phone on the table in front of me and acted as greeting a homecoming child and waited a couple of minutes.
Then picked up phone and apologized for having to leave.
Listened to several minutes more.
Then yelled Son bring me a beer and get one for you're self for passing that test today.
Listened some more and then excused myself.
After several minutes I returned to phone explaining my sons girl Friend had come over. Then began to reminiscence about 12 year olf puppy love.
Then more info about this great mtg plan being offered and I yelled yes son you can have another beer and one for you're little friend.
I listened some more then suddenly started yelling that they were not going to have sex in my house and had to go to hers. Dropped the phone and didn't return for 10 minutes;he was gone. My call timer logged 23 minutes for that call.
Never heard from that co again.

My favorite is one I heard..
