I had to install this by downloading from Garmin's web site, not through Mapsource's internal update feature...

MapSource's internal update

MapSource's internal update feature rarely if ever works properly.

Concur

I agree with Motorcycle Mama.

Does anyone know if the latest update is cumalative? I just got my GPS and Mapsource a week ago and it is version 6.10.2 so there have been several updates.

All the MapSource updates

All the MapSource updates have been cumulative. You can just download and install the update from Garmin's website.

I'm confused

I'm still pretty new to the GPS world, so I have a question. Is MapSource a separate program, or is it something that comes with your GPS? I have the Garmin C550 with the maps preloaded. I see some GPS units come with a CD, so I am assuming that the maps are on the CD.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have really learned a lot in the past two week of visiting this website.

Also, I don't think I will ever associate POI with points of interest. I lived in Hawaii 14 years, and POI is a totally different animal over there!

I'm fairly new at this, but

I'm fairly new at this, but reading as much as I can on this and other forums Mapsource is a separate program for your PC. Mine came on a DVD with my Garmin 7200 but as I understand it, not all GPS units include the DVD.
PS-I was in Hawaii for a couple years in the mid 60s and poi is definitely a different animal!

Mapsource and c550

Units with maps preloaded do not come with mapsource, however many of us have requested the program from Garmin and received it free of charge.
Mapsource is PC based and was the main method for loading individual maps to your GPS. However, many of us requested it to transfer (backup and load) favorites to the GPS and also to retrieve long and lat data from favorites saved on our GPSr (such as when you save a favorite by touching the car on the map when at a location). Mapsource allows you to pre plan trips on the PC also.
Do a search on Mapsource on this site to obtain more info. By explaining to Garmin that we wanted to software to create, save, and transfer waypoints, they sent it out free of charge.
Good luck in your search as there is plenty of information here.

Is this mapsource

something I should download? I searched through my C550 and it had North America Version 8. so I thought I would ask.. I think their update system sucks!

You need to call Garmin and get them to send it to you.

In my opinion...

...Mapsource is one of the best part of Garmin GPS usage...

It worked.. CD is in the mail

I sent an email request, and received an email confirmation today with an order number!

Voided Warranty

Good thing you figured that out before trying to stuff poi into your GPS. That would probably void your warranty.

Excellent! And I ride a 2005 Honda Aero.

Don't need that!

You are right, I sure don't need to void my warranty!
I also got an e-mail from Garmin today. I had them remove my old GPS from my account, because I returned it to Amazon.com, and I asked for a copy of MapSource. I was told they would send me the CD with no problem. Garmin really seems to be customer oriented.
