How do you find out what changes are made when you install a software update to your device (1490 to be specific)?
r u using My Dashboard?
If you are using My Dashboard, nothing is being uploaded, but unit history is being downloaded.
Use Web Updater instead of My Dashboard. It tells you if anything needs updating and doesn't download your unit's history to Garmin.

So you're saying that
So you're saying that dashboard doesn't actually do any updating when it says a software update is available?

That depends
It tells you if anything needs updating and doesn't download your unit's history to Garmin.
I never agree to have my data downloaded when I use MyGarmin, and I always opt out. Now, whether or not they still do it is another thing completely...

myDashboard
myDashboard will provide the update just like webupdater will but with dashboard you will never know what is being updated. With webupdater you will see what firmware is being updated and also be able to pick exactly what other available updates you want.

my dashboard spying on us?
If you are using My Dashboard, nothing is being uploaded, but unit history is being downloaded.
I have no proof of what I’m about to say is true but it is plausible, if when you connect to My Dashboard Garmin is downloading history as Box car indicated it maybe to improve the mapping/POI and here is how I got there.
On my new 2460LMT I can add/change while driving speed limit to streets and roads that don’t have it or are incorrect.
I can also click on a POI and report the error right from my GPSr and the messages are “Report Error” and it then comes back with “Report a map error? This item will be removed from future searches” BTW I tried deleting an Albertson’s store that closed two weeks ago and it is no longer in my search.
If the correction is limited to my own unit, why the displayed message says “Report Error”?
I have not read anywhere that this maybe the information My Dashboard is gathering but it makes sense, what other history could they be gathering, that I drove to the red light district looking for girls of the night? That I was driving too fast? That I often ignored what “Jack or Jill said?
In case you are wondering it is early afternoon I haven’t started drinking yet

i think if you search back
I think if you search back through the threads about My Dashboard you will find some early discussions where not only was the software downloading information to the units it was also doing an upload to Garmin. Exactly what data was sent was never disclosed. It could be just error logs or could have been track data.
Some of the earlier information put out by Garmin about the ad supported traffic was over time the system would begin to tailor ads for you. The only way the system could know to tailor ads would be by the station transmitting or from information gathered about your most common routes.
We know Garmin has the ability to upload from your unit, we are all asked if we want to share data with Garmin "to improve" their systems. Now, that doesn't imply that Web Updater doesn't do the same things, but as stated you at least know what, if anything needs updating.
