Can't Access Phonebook on Garmin 3790LMT

I used to be able to access my smartphone's contacts list as a phonebook in my Garmin 3790LMT when it is paired via Bluetooth.

After a recent firmware update from Android 2.2 to Android 2.3, I can no longer access the phone's contacts list. The phone and the GPS unit still pair and connect successfully, but my GPS unit only displays options for dialing and no option to access the phone's contact list as a phonebook.

Anybody know how to fix this so I can access my phone's contacts list on my GPS unit when they are paired and connected?

Phone is a Samsung Galaxy S phone. I've tried various combinations of pairing and unpairing without success. Even tried changing the friendly name of the GPS unit. I'm using the newest available firmware on both the phone and the GPS unit.

I already tried asking this on androidforums.com but got no answer there. I didn't find anything with a Google search either.

Anybody have any ideas? Help!

...

I did a google search for "Android 2.3 bluetooth problem" and one of the responses was about an individual having a similar problem when pairing his smartphone with another device (not a GPS) after upgrading to Android 2.3.

The problem was a security issue with the phone. After pairing the devices 2 or 3 times, a security pop-up appeared on the phone asking if it was OK for the other device to read the phonebook. He responded positively and the other device was able to import the phonebook from the phone.

Don't know if it will help your situation but it may be worth a try.

I've tried unpairing and re-pairing a dozen times. The security pop-up never appears.

Similar problem with Nuvi 760 and HTC Phone

After a firmware update to my 760, the phonebook from my HTC Windows phone will not transfer to the Nuvi any more. It worked flawlessly before the update.

I try deleting the pairing from both the nuvi and the HTC. The phone pairs, the nuvi shows the PhoneBook icon for a couple of minutes, then it disappears. There is no prompt to confirm the phonebook transfer. Pressing the phonebook icon while it is displayed results in "No data is available" message. When it worked with the earlier firmware, there used to be a one-time confirmation prompt at the first pairing.

With a 3790, the phonebook transfers from the HTC without a problem, every time it pairs.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the phonebook from my wife's Samsung transfers OK with both firwmware versions. Neither of our phones are on Garmin's "officially supported" list.

Something similiar with zumo 660 and LG Ally

It use to connect and get the phone book with no problems. I forgot what I did to the zumo (I'm always doing something new to it) but they stopped connecting for a while.

The problem was actually with the phone. The phone software actually limits what you can do with previous connections and does not even have a delete connection selection. At one time while trying a new connection again the phone actually showed me 3 previous that I was unable to delete from the phone.

Furious with the phone (it almost met the wall at a high velocity) and its software limitations I finally just disabled all bluetooth features on both the GPS and the phone. After a day I turned on the bluetooth on the phone again, briefly saw the 3 connections and them a moment later saw the phone remove them by it self. I disabled the bluetooth again on the phone,re-enabled it and then turned on the bluetooth on the zumo and they connected with no problem and transferred the phonebook.

I would lay odds it is the phones causing most all of the bluetooth problems. Even when you update your GPS firmware I bet the phone is somehow trying to use the connection to the old GPS firmware and isn't getting it out of its memory.

About a year ago I had the same problem with one of the 765Ts after and update. Again furious after deleting everything I could and disabling the bluetooth on both for a few days before trying again and then it worked fine.

I'm thinking it is the phones in these 2 cases.

Still No Luck

Hi bear007

I tried what you suggested with disabling bluetooth for a few days, but the phonebook still won't transfer.

I might try again in a few days, but it is looking like I should give up on being able to use the phonebook for now.

Hmm

I will have to check if mine works

3790lmt

I had a more perplexing problem with my 3790lmt. The bluetooth and voice command features disappeared altogether. Garmin tech support took me through a reset but no luck. They say I have to send the unit in to be serviced. Anyone else experience this problem??

With my 3760t I had similar

With my 3760t I had similar problems, I just sent it back to Garmin, they sent me a new one. 5x

Phonebook

I have the same problem, it looks like an Android issue.

Also read somewhere

Also read somewhere, unsure if it was here or another site, the early models did have some major problems and they quoted a S/number after which the problem was corrected, I'll try and find it, but Garmin were very keen to exchange my units, no questions asked, and did it 5x. My current model is doing OK with no problems, my s/n 1W5021***. Hope this helps. I understand things may be a little different here in the South Sea Islands.

I had the same problem with my iPhone. The first time I paired my iPhone with my 1490LMT the phone book transferred all the contacts. Every time I would pair them after that, I had no phone book and every caller id showed unknown. I found the post below and followed the steps. Now my phone book shows every time I pair my phone.

Remember to backup first. The original post also states eco route info will be lost and it will have to be re-entered. Allow time for your phone book to transfer. I notice that a call history folder shows up after a minute then after about 4 or 5 minutes the phone book shows up.

Not sure if it matters but I usually turn on the GPS with bluetooth enabled then turn on the bluetooh on the phone.

Yes -- I have a work around for you that worked for me, all thanks to another poster who enlightened me.

1) connect up your Nuvi to your computer.
2) Set your file manager to see hidden files and folders - this is critical, since the system files are hidden.
3) open file manager to look at directories on your Nuvi.
4) under the ".system" dir, you will see a "SQlite" directory - open the SQlite directory.
5) scroll down to the file named "mlg_history.db"
6) forever delete the mlg_history.db file
7) safe remove your Nuvi from your computer
8) upon restart, the Nuvi will remake this file, but only with minimal info inside.

This idea also did not work. After seven minutes neither a call history folder nor the phone book showed up.

For now I'm just going to assume that Samsung's customizations to Android is what's preventing this from working, and maybe a future firmware update will fix this. Meanwhile, I guess I'll have to go without my phone book being on my GPS unit.

Appears to be fixed

I did a "factory reset" of my cell phone today and that appears to have fixed it.

After turning on both bluetooth on my phone and turning on the GPS unit, I got a dialog box on my phone for accepting the bluetooth connection and then a notification at the top for authorizing the phone book transfer.

Phone book is now showing up on the GPS unit. The call log history doesn't show up, but at least the phone book does. Phone book showing up on the GPS unit is more important to me anyway.

Now to go put stuff back on my cell phone.

Does your caller ID on the GPS work also?

Don't know yet. Haven't yet received a call while connected to the GPS unit.

I'll update this thread once I have.

fwiw, sometimes my iPhone's phonebook shows up on the Nuvi, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it shows up after several minutes.

Ok, I finally received a phone call while my phone was connected to my GPS unit via Bluetooth.

Yes, "caller ID" worked. I assume the GPS unit used the contacts list from my phone to find the name belonging to the incoming phone number.

So at this point, the call history works, the phone book works, "caller ID" for incoming calls works.

So it took months for me to figure out, but I can finally say that the Bluetooth connection from phone to GPS unit is fully working now.

Garmin 2595

I removed the phone from Garmin, and deleted the garmin from phone (iphone 6), renamed phone ,switched off bluetooth on both devices. turned everything back on and found the phone again with new name. Phone book is back on now.
