Garman Proximity

Is there a way to set the distance from an established route when searching for a poi such as Truck RV filling stations, restaurant, or other?
When on rout and hit fuel button a list appears with millage and an arrow. My difficulty is figuring witch is ex. 15 miles further but .5 of route or the one that 15 miles detour from route. Not knowing makes the feature practically useless to me.
Then there is the problem where the POI will show 15 miles but when you add as a via point it may actually be 30 miles to get there.
Am I using this wrong?

Search distances

Search distances are always shown as straight line distances, not driving distances. What you are seeing is just how the unit works. You can tailor those results in a couple of ways, the easiest is to do a search either along the route or near a city that is along the route. There is still no guarantee the point will be close, but at least it will eliminate some of the options.

Depending on the type of fuel needed, you can also select the type of fuel stop through use of custom POI. There are several lists of truck stops available and those are almost always close to the highway. Many do serve any traveler rather than just trucks.

The other options require a computer. When planning the route, you can use Mapsource and look for different stops that would meet your need or, you can use TurboCCC's Extra_POI_Editor program to search custom POI along your route.

so it is useless. WE travel

so it is useless.
WE travel back roads in unfamiliar areas.
Usually allow gps to route us after we are off exploring a few hours.
just think it would be nice if Garmin had the unit list distance from route. Even line of sight distance would be better than now.

.

Just choose the POI type from the menu, and it will show you the direction of it (green arrow). Choose the POI, and before you hit 'Go', it will show the overland mileage to it. Or, hit 'Map' and it'll show where it is.

Use TourGuide format

We're big rv'ers and often find ourselves passing through new-to-us areas. We have most of our POI files set up as TourGuides ... which allow us to set a "circle" of alert notifications ... we can set TourGuides to a half mile off route for RV filing stations ... or a two-mile circle of notification for Good Sam or PassPort America campgrounds ...

Using the TourGuide format allows you to set the distance for each file ... and will sound off whenever you pass close to one of your desired POI locations.

Works like a charm.

Search POI Factory for more-than-you-care-to-know about setting up TourGuides.
