2011.4 to be officially released tomorrow

I just got off the phone with a Garmin representative who stated that the 2011.4 map update will be officially released tomorrow. Thought I would let everyone know.

2011.4 To Be Officially Released Tomorrow

Thanks for the tip!

maybe, maybe not!

maybe, maybe not!

Reps name

What was the reps name? So we know who to call if it's not released. LOL

I'm not going to hold my breath on 2011.40 - we'll see.

I'm not going to hold my breath. Funny, I just got off the phone with a rep this afternoon who said they have no idea - could be several weeks or a month before it is out. They don't communicate their schedule internally - let alone externally. Why in the world can't they simply post a schedule on their site and stick by it (give or take a day here and there) instead of issuing them at whim?

Hopefully

Hopefully it's out tomorrow but if history serves these reps don't know anything more than we do about when firmware and maps will be released.

It could be released anytime today

When I asked the Garmin representative when it would be released today, he said at any time, meaning it could very well be released in the afternoon and not in the morning.

Download took about 25 minutes ... entire update process less than an hour. That is pretty consistent with previous map updates.

It took about 28 minutes or so. I was going by the timer in the map updater. I won't make that mistake again!

Wonder about changes

I always wonder if there will actually be any changes in the areas I normally drive. I have 2 units to update.

I'm kind of hoping they added speed limit info for some of the highways around the Santa Rosa and Napa area (California). It boggles my mind that there are stretches of major highway in that area with no speed limit information - especially as Highway 12 has some 55 mph zones where one wouldn't expect the limit to be that low.

Thanks for the info! Awesome.

thanks..

thanx a bunch for the info.

Still some holes

Just downloaded and installed 2011.04. There is a bypass around Dublin, GA, that was opened last June and I drove on in December, but it's not on the map. So, there's still some catching up to do.

Junction Views

Junction Views have been expanded in the new release, at least for Canadians or folks driving in Canada. There are now PhotoReal Junction Views in 2011.40. Reports have it that there are actually over 3000 of them in total.

Don't appear to be any for the US as of yet.

Photoreal views are the ones that have been in the City Navigator Europe maps for some time. This is the first time they have appeared in North American maps. They make the Junction View look like an actual photo of the junction, in place of the 'drawing' we have been used to up to this point.

Junction View Photoreal views have shown up for the US NA maps ever since I got my 885T a couple of years ago and also are displayed by my Kenwood/Garmin unit in some US areas. There are tons of them that show up when navigating in the LA area.

.

The PhotoReal Junction Views that t923347 is speaking of are improved over the standard Junction Views in that they look much more realistic, with a photo quality to them. Too bad POI Factory does not allow posting of pictures...maybe he can post the link to where he did post them as they look very nice indeed.

Sorry

Sorry rjrsw but I think those in LA are the ordinary Junction Views not the Photoreal ones.

Examples of the Photoreal views can be seen at:

an example of an ordinary junction view can be found at:

The photo-realistic views

The photo-realistic views are a result of Navteq (the company that Garmin uses for maps and map features like junction view) using a more advanced method of collecting data called Navteq True. You can find out more about this feature from here: http://www.nn4d.com/site/global/learn/navteq_true/p_navteq_t...

More specific information on how the process works and information regarding when us GPS users will actually start to see the results from this new process are contained in these two videos: http://www.geeknewscentral.com/2010/02/13/navteq-advances-in...
