Microsoft Streets & Trips 2011

Thanks for the link I have been waiting for the new version. I update every year and use it to plan all our trips in the motorhome. Great product.

Thanks

I've always loved their software. I wonder how they make money on it and keep selling it.

Here'$ how they do it

I can't speak to the 2011 edition, not having tried it, but some people were complaining on amazon in reviewing the 2010 edition that Microsoft had stopped updating maps on this software a while ago... that even interstate highways that were extended several years ago were still not shown on their 2010 maps. Still, the 2010 edition of Streets & Trips got better overall ratings from users (4 stars) than most software.

The changes that have been made in recent years have been mostly minor feature upgrades, by most reports.

In reading the Amazon reviews about map updates, it appears they mirror the same complaints posted on this site about the GPS unit updates.

The 2011

The maps in S&T 2011 are reportedly one and a half years newer than those in the 2010 version.

They better be as there is very few reasons to update to 2011 from 2010. Almost no feature enhancements at all sad

Yes, definitely. Which is odd to me. I'm sure updating the maps is labor-intensive and expensive, but to me, having up-to-date maps is the whole point of updating maps on a GPS or map software. If the maps are several years old, what's the point?

Not sure how much they

Not sure how much they improve. I stop using it since 2009. Thanks for the URL. Will give a try again for Gates.

How much does it cost after the 60 day trial?

2011???

down loaded it, tried it, seems to be the same as 2010, maps have changed a little, no new functionality as far a I could tell( Delorme added the ability to designate a stop as a fuel stop, nothing similar here)

designating stops

blake7mstr wrote:

Isn't designating a stop a fuel stop roughly the same as scheduling a stop for 15 to 30 minutes? That's what I do with my version of S&T.

yes and no

in Delorme, you set up your fuel page similar to Streets, when you locate a gas station you insert a stop, and designate it a fuel stop with time, after you do this the next fuel icon will adjust according to how you set up the fuel page mpg/capacity of your tank etc, how ever you set up your fuel page. I haven't figured out how to do the same with Streets, you can schedule stops but it doesn't change the fuel stop line. Like I have said before, I usually use Streets for planning, Delorme for routing.

$39.95

$39.95 from Microsoft:

May appear on Amazon or in stores for slightly less.

Thanks. I had SA2009 and threw it out because of all the errors in the maps. It wouldn't even plot a route from Lemoore, CA down the 17 Mile Drive in Carmel. It couldn't even find a route from Lemoore to Carmel. That, and I found the user interface very difficult to work with. I did like the ability to supposedly create routable street additions, but I couldn't get it to work after correcting and adding streets in Lemoore. S&T had the missing streets and was able to both find and create the route.

" It wouldn't even plot a route from Lemoore, CA down the 17 Mile Drive in Carmel." That's because even the people that live in Lemoore don't know where it is, they think it's Hanford.... Just kidding I use to live there!

Temp pricing on S&T 2011

I just got an email from Microsoft offering the software for $29.95, ordering through Microsoft "To purchase Streets & Trips at the discounted price you need to use the promotion code FAMILY during check out."
The same email offered an additional product, Family Tree Maker for $9.95, discounted from $39.95. I have used several versions of this product since I started doing genealogy in 1998. I bought the current version about 5 weeks ago from Costco, what a dog that product was! I had to search online for a way to open the file created by my previous version, since there was no way to do it using the choices presented by the new program. Then when I did get it running, it crashed every few minutes, a very bad thing to happen when handling a database like a family tree. I returned it to Costco for a full refund.
I have my doubts about the utility of S&T 2011 and attaching the inadequate Family Tree Maker program offer only increases them.

Streets and Trips 2011 GPX file creation

I recently upgraded to 2011 and have discovered that the GPX file output will NOT load into Garmin's Base Camp. The 2011 version places a "Invalid DateTime-07:00" tag in the xml file which invalidates the data import. Remove the phrase (and it's html tags) and the file will import. BTW, I'm guessing the -07:00 is the time zone as I am in Mountain time zone.

When that tag is removed, Base Camp can import the file. I have sent this info to Garmin is hopes that they can patch any Garmin software that might need to read the 2011 gpx file. I attempted to contact Microsoft but I WILL NOT pay 35.00 dollars to report that they've got a problem just to have them "pat" me on the head and ignore.

I thought I'd pass this along in case anyone else is having problems or uses Base Camp.

I have not and do not load the gpx file directly from 2011 to my Garmin GPS's so I cannot vouch to proper loading of the devices.

Although

Although I haven't looked at the cause of the problem I can confirm that a GPX file exported from S&T 2011 can not be loaded into BaseCamp. I also found that it could not be loaded into Mapsource either.

The same gpx file does 'import' correctly directly onto the Nuvi however.

@akbykr - you may want to post your findings on the Streets and Trips forum at http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/microsoft-streets-trips/

A couple of the Microsoft S&T people are active members there and you'll probably get a response posted there for FREE.

"Improvements" Not Really Better

I too used to purchase S&T every year (or get it as a birthday present smile ). I enjoyed "planning" our long trips and used it in conjunction with my GPS for identifying appropriate stopovers, interesting sites along the way, etc.

However I was disappointed with S&T 2010. I was not impressed with the textured pushpins and their colours, and the time calculations for trip segments seemed to be off quite a bit. Given the issues with exporting files to a Gamin, I will likely not buy S&T 2011.

Too bad, as the Canadian dollar is above parity for a change!

I downloaded it and

I downloaded it and activated it but it won't start up for me.

"Improvements" Not Really Better

I just got my new copy last week. I got mine through a good sam e-mail taking 20.00 off. Still cheaper after the shiping added. I got the CD as I load it on both the desktop and laptop. worked fine. haven't tried any new things yet.
