1390 Updating Maps

A friend just bought a new 1390. He updated the maps and installed Mapsource. Although he can see tracks etc. in Mapsource, the maps did not appear. Is this normal?

When I updated my maps for my 855, it downloaded Mapsource and the maps were stored on the computer as well.

Also, when one retires ac omputer and transfers everything to a new box, how do you move Mapsource's maps as well? Garmin didn't make this easy.

I've heard there are (free?) 3rd party tools better than Mapsource, which one is the best?

login to your garmin account

login to your garmin account and you should be able to download those maps again.

also, not sure but perhaps you can copy the maps over from old PC to the new, but the experts here have to tell whether or not this will work with mapsource.

When your friend updated the maps, did he or she click the Install Options button, then select the choice to install the new map to the GPS and computer? The default installation is to install the map update only to the GPS. The options include installation to GPS only, computer only, or GPS and computer--and there's also an option to keep the installation files on the PC (for installation to multiple GPS units with lifetime subscriptions) without having to redownload the 2GB or so of updates.

If your friend missed the Install Options button, go back to Garmin's site and download the map again and select Install to Computer only.
