Over the speed limit alert possible on 295w?

Is it possible to set an over the speed limit warning for more than one speed on the 295w?
it has the posted speed limit sign on the screen. The closest I was able to get anything similar to this was by loading wifi poi and then setting the speed thing to 60 in poi. I have scoured these forums but anything i find is not in lamen terms. I simply want to be alerted if I'm over the speed limit anywhere that the unit shows a the posted limit. Anyone care to explain this to a caveman? lol

On my 1490 the speed limit box turns red if I am over the limit - no way to put a vocal warning though.

have you tried the voice

have you tried the voice editor by turboccc?

Does it matter?

If there is no sound or voice alert to begin with, edit the voice probably would not help.

Can't get it to work. get (voice file corrupt)

I have been working on this to no avail.

I followed all the instructions

1.plug garmin into computer
2.navigate to voice files
3.select the correct tts voice (i selected english american jill)
4.copied to computer to save as back up
5.Started TTSVoiceEditor
6.located english american jill on nuvi device
7.opened voice into program
8.Double clicked (turn left)
9.changed the (turn left) and made it into (turn left dumba**) with out the stars of course.
10.clicked ok
11.click file>save>then clicked on the English_American_Jill.vpm in the garmin voice folder making sure it had the extension vpm and clicked saved.
12.asked if i wanted to overwrite the existing file and i clicked yes.
13. exited out of the garmin stuff then used the safe disconnect devices in system tray.
14.unplugged the 295w from the usb and let it start it's self up.
-----
15. which brings me to the error i get when it gets right past the accept agreement screen. it says (voice file corrupt)

so I cannot figure out what is going wrong and I have done this more than once now and also used not only the new version of the voice editor but the previous version figuring there might be a bug in the newer version of the program when used with my model.

Any ideas?

Did you go to web updater and do the latest voice update. It will be on the second page to check for additional updates. If you have the latest voice update re-load it any way. Then repeat steps for voice editor.

Yes you are supposed to be able to do that with the program. I believe the reccomended level is 80-85 but I'm keeping mine at 80. I will let someone else explain it since I'm still having probs at the moment with it.

I have to ask.

What does all of this voice/phrase changes have to do with getting a speed alert. This looks to be way off topic. Maybe the moderator can split this off(if she ever has time).

Yah sorry about that. It started off as one thing and then it changed over and I kind of went with the flow lol. I thought it might still be ok since it was all revolving specifically around the 295w model.

OK, I think I give up. I'm not the greatest with computers, But I know enough to know that my computer has it out for me... I did what you said and once again I came back to the voice file corrupt message. I tried it upwards of about 10 times and started getting mad and then the last time I did it I accidentally ended up over writing the old file since it doesn't save my pref of where I go to save the file but rather to where I got the file from and I wasn't even thinking when I clicked overwrite existing file? So now my tts jill is gone. I tried the web update both with the corrupted file in the garmin and with out it in there and webupdate wont redownload jill for me. so then i googled english american jill archive and it came back with this

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1007

so i downloaded the exe hoping that would work but upon setup screen it asks for which com port. none of them worked. so i tried the usb option and it said device not detected. ugh so if anyone has jill uploaded somewhere i would appreciate the link to it, to at least still have the normal voice.

Here I am...

Hi tdsj81,

I stopped reading at the middle of your first post when you wrote you accessed the voice file from within TTSVoiceEditor (TTSVE) directly in the Voice folder on the nuvi. No good!

You need to open/save directly on the computer and copy the file back to the voice folder from outside of TTSVE. A year ago, I had a user with a similar problem. Once he copied the file in Windows, the problem disappeared.

If you tried that already, I'll continue to investigate.

Best regards,

Turbo

N.B. Thank you for pointing me to this thread. Sometimes, I do not see all the threads...

I had done that before.

Yes I had made that mistake, But I had switched over to doing it like you said. And I just attempted the way you said to do it but I still get the voice file error. Which I'm not sure if it is caused by the file already being corrupted from before hand. or still just a glitch that I'm running into. If I had an un-corrupted new file to work with then I would be able to tell you if I was still having the problem. But I am unable to find the english american jill voice online. I found the exe file I mentioned earlier on the thread but it would not install. Thanks for the help on this matter.

Turboccc and tdsj81,

I see from the link you offered tdsj, that the file size is 15580 kb. That is the file size for my Jill file on my nuvi 750 and 855 but is not the size of the Jill voice on my new 295w. The 295w file size is 15554 kb. Maybe insignificant, but maybe it means the 295w Jill voice is different from other nuvi models and maybe it won't work on 295w units.

I did not attempt nor do I plan to download a file from a file sharing site, especially one that requires installing software to be able to download files. Call me cautious...

It's an idea but?

Not sure I understand since my nuvi file is the same as your 750 and 855 but not the same as the 295w. If it were different on different models wouldn't that mean that our 295w's would be the same and the 750 and 855 would be the different ones?

Had me worried for a sec after I seen how you said it needed to install a program to download it. I went to the site. Don't click on the bubble that says download. Click on the text that says download in the bottom right corner and it allows you to download the straight vpm file.

Where is the file coming from?

Hi tdsj81,

Where did you take the Jill file in the first place? From your 295w? CraigW is right about file size. I do not know what is the normal file size for the 295W. The 255 and 265 models use a Vocalizer engine which makes the file around 2MB. The other models use the RealSpeak engine and the files are above 12MB.

This was one of the reason I asked for a d/l link. I wanted to have a look at the file to see if I had an original one to propose.

Ler \t me ask this again: do you still have an original copy of Jill? If you put it on the GPS, is it still working? If not, we need to get you a new copy to try. This should be the first step.

But didn't you delete the original 295w Jill?

I thought you said you deleted or overwrote the original 295w Jill and downloaded Jill from Garmin. If that's true, the Jill Garmin offered you may be a 750/855/etc-compatible Jill but not a 295w Jill. I'll bow out and let the turbo-pro take over since I'm in deeper than I should be into programmer-type stuff.

If no one's able to help, a call to Garmin Tech support to get Jill replaced on your 295w may be a good option.

I just wonder if this Jan. 2 2008 13.56MB Jill is not 295w-compatible since my installed Jill on the 295w is different from my 750 and 855.

K, the file that I uploaded (click on the link that says save to computer not the bubble button) is a copy that i made of the voice file from the nuvi voice folder. I took it and copied it to my desktop and then that is the one I was using in your program. and then I would take that and try to save it two different ways. 1.using program to save it to the nuvi voice folder and 2. saving it to a new location on my computer hard drive and then dragging it into the voice folder and over writing the existing file. both ways allowing me to have the orig file still on my computer for back up. k but as i was saying the file i uploaded was orig the orig file but i accidently overwrote it while saving my phrases and it is now the modified version. if you open it up you should see either the recalculating changed or another one i cant remember where i left of with it. but yes I would like to get a fresh copy of the file so i can follow exactly what you tell me to do so we know if it lies in my own mess ups or a glitch conflicting between this model and the program. so if someone that has the 295w with an unmodified american jill and uploads it then i can start from scratch and so on lol. hope i answered everything.

File looks good

I compared his file with the one I have here. There is nothing special about it. It is good and not corrupted.

tdsj81, you are using Jill v2.60 which is somewhat new, but poses no issue. I wonder if you have the matching gps firmware to go with it, but if you got the new Jill on your 295W using WebUpdater, your GPS fw should be good otherwise WU would not have given it to you.

There is something else going on, and it may not be related. Have you tried a different unmodified voice? Is it working?

How to get a new copy

Delete Jill on your GPS. Reboot once. Let it completely reboot. It should see Jill is not there.

Plug USB and use web updater. It will install the missing Jill.

yah i downloaded that exe but it wont load.

The 295w file size is 15554 kb. Maybe insignificant, but maybe it means the 295w Jill voice is different from other nuvi models.

Not sure I understand since my nuvi file is the same as your 750 and 855 but not the same as the 295w. If it were different on different models wouldn't that mean that our 295w's would be the same and the 750 and 855 would be the different ones?

I thought you said you deleted or overwrote the original 295w Jill and downloaded Jill from Garmin. If that's true, the Jill Garmin offered you may be a 750/855/etc-compatible Jill but not a 295w Jill. I'll bow out and let the turbo-pro take over since I'm in deeper than I should be into programmer-type stuff.

If no one's able to help, a call to Garmin Tech support to get Jill replaced on your 295w may be a good option.

yah i downloaded that jill exe but it wouldn't install for me. i haven't even touched that thing again for a lil while now. i've been focused on the vpm file that accidently got overwritten.

This sounds the best

tdsj, this sounds like the best bet for you. Be sure to fully reboot the GPS after deleting Jill and before using WebUpdater. Either do a full shutdown--not just a "sleep" shutdown--or better yet, remove and replace to battery to ensure a complete reboot.

GOOD DEAL!

OK, good deal! I did as you instructed and webupdate finally let me download the jill. Now if you are up for it at helping me change a phrase that we have a good working file I would be willing to listen. If not it is ok as you have already helped me out with a lot.

=)

yes I had tried it with the TTS jack. But still got the voice file corrupt. So before I accidently overwrote that one I put it back in place and stopped messing with it so I wouldn't lose one of the last TTS voices lol.

voice corrupted

I am still puzzled by your Voice Corrupted error. Anyways. It has worked for some many people, I can't think of a reason why it would not work for you...

1- Copy Jill .VPM in a folder on your computer
2- Start TTSVE
3- Open the VPM file you copied on your computer
4- Find "Recalculating" or is it "recalculate"? Change both if you do not know which one... smile
5- Double click on "recalcul..."
6- In the pop-up dialog, type a new phrase you want and click OK.
7- Click the Save button. Overwrite the file you copied earlier on your computer. Keep the same file name.
8- Using Windows, copy the modified VPM to your GPS in the Voice folder.
9- Reboot GPS and check if you get your error message. Make sure to check if Jill is still selected in the Voice menu.

If you still have an error:

1- Connect the GPS to the computer. Browse to the Voice folder. Find Jill and delete the Jill .SUM (not VPM) checksum file. Normally, it does not change anything, but I wonder if the 290W has a different algo. This is a checksum file and it is harmless to remove it.

2- Post back...

No sum

turbo, the 295w only has the .vpm files. Unlike my 750 and 855, there are no .sum files for any voices on the 295w.

SUM files

Ok. SUM files appear only when you click on the battery for 5-10 seconds and run the test. No need to do it. It was just a wild guess.
