What name is my old map under?

I use a Mac, I'm not use to these Windows naming strategies. I know I have the new map on my 660 but there appears to be a 2009 map for a few states that has been on there forever. I don't want to delete the wrong thing but I'd like to get rid of the 2009 map 'cause I keep getting notices that it needs updating plus it takes up room. What name would it be under. I see: gmapbmap.img, gmapprom.img, GMAPPROM.gma, GMAPPROM.uni, and gmapsupp.img. Which of those is likely to be the old map?? Thanks for your advice.

What is the message?

Just trying to understand what is happening.

When does the message appear (and I assume it appears on your 660) and what exactly does it say?

Likely gmapsupp

The 'old' map is likely to be gmapsupp, but that's not a guarantee, I don't think.

Here's a thread about map names that might be helpful-
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/19164
Although it's about 7x0/7x5 mapsets, I think you'll find it informative and it will give you some background on the naming convention.

If it were me, I'd back up the gmapsupp.img file to my hard drive or an SD card, delete it from the unit and reboot it to see for sure. Just don't mess with gmapprom. files or gmapbmap files until you feel bold enough, because they are your primary maps. surprised

If it's the original map, it will be gmapprom.img. gmapsupp.img is a second map, likely the map from, for example, the 2011.30 update.

If you can see file sizes on the Mac, delete the smaller of the two (likely gmapprom.img), since "a few states" doesn't take up nearly as much space as the whole of North America.

Except the 2011.30 update I just did on my 295W is named gmapprom.img. Webupdater over-wrote the orig. gmapprom, but I have a backup. The gmapprom.unl is the 'unlock' file, btw.

..Whatever you delete, make a backup so you can put it back on the unit. laugh out loud

In doing the update on my

In doing the update on my 200W yesterday, I checked the name of the file after doing the update and it was named gmapsupp.img. I rename mine to gmapprom.img even though I don't need to, which is why I check.

If yours automatically renamed to gmapprom.img, then that is a change in the updater I'm not aware of. Nevertheless, I agree with backing up the files before deleting one or the other.

The old map was

I removed both:
gmapsupp.img
gmapbmap.img

which both had a 2009 date and all is well. I knew the new map replaced the previous one so you did not have to delete the old map when a new one came in but it didn't occur to look at the date until someone above suggested it. Thanks. I also knew the naming thread existed but couldn't find it until someone else above listed it. Thanks.

The essence of this is it saves space on the NUVI 660 for now until Garmin settles on a better new model with lifetime maps. It looks like the 3760 is due for replacement in April according to Amazon and maybe I'll be ready to go there then after the bugs in the current one are fixed. The old 660 still works well.

gmapbmap

gmapbmap.img is the file for the World Basemaps. This file allows for routing on major roads when using the Nuvi in parts of the world not covered by your installed version of City Navigator. This file doesn't normally get updated so depending on your needs you may want to put it back on your unit.

Not sure what you mean by this statement. The 37xx series are Garmin's newest models (currently available) and doubt that they will be replaced any time soon.

3760 LMT

Yesterday I got a page from Amazon for Nuvi 3760LMT with a release date of April 2011. I don't see that page today. Is that model actually out now? I see it listed some places but not Amazon.

I will put that map back Thanks.

LMT means Lifetime Maps/ Traffic. Garmin has been adding this as a value feature for the past while.

gmapsupp.img is NOT the updated maps.

gmapsupp.img is created by either sending map segments from MapSource or possibly as supplimental maps from mapinstall. Delete gmapsupp.img (and gmapsupp.sum or gmapsupp.unl if present) before doing a map update and empty the MacTrashcan. The web mapupdate has NEVER created a gmapsupp file on either of my two GPS models.

If it returns from the web mapupdate install, I'll eat my GPS.

The 3760 has been around for a few months now. A few weeks ago Garmin stated to bundle the lifetime traffic and maps with the 3760 so it became the 3760LMT (Lifetime Maps Traffic) but it's the same GPS.
