Would he take the holiday off in honor of himself?

Happy Columbus Day everyone!

The battery...

...would have went dead before he got halfway across the Atlantic and then he would have started sailing around in circles. Then again, with Jill telling him that she was re-calculating all of the time, he may have thrown her overboard before the battery died. Poor Jill!!!! laugh out loud

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

russia

would have invaded russia then.

At least

someplace north & east (only right turns)

Longitude

I read a great book about 2 years ago which I considered the beginning of GPS basics. The book is called "Longitude". It is about an international contest sponsored by the King of France (1600s) to figure out the location of ships in real time.
Apparently ships were getting lost and wars were being lost because sailors did not know the longitude of their location during the day. At night they followed the stars but they got lost in the day time and on cloudy nights. It's a novel and very easy reading.
The movie was pretty bad. I highly recommend the book.

Sorry. I forgot the author

He would have known that he wasn't in india and therefore wouldn't have called the occupants Indians. Happy Columbus Day to all of us who have gotten lost at one time or another.

True

He would have had to call them 'Americans'...

Just a thought.

Happy Columbus Day!

You can thank Amerigo Vespucci, Italian map maker. He mapped it and had no idea what to call it, so he signed his name

Why he would be surely to be

Why he would be surely to be an active member of the POI-Factory community of course. grin

If he had a Nuvi

He would have been told to make a U-turn about 12,567,828 times.

Explaining it to the Queen,

Explaining it to the Queen, as part of his sales pitch, would have been VERY difficult.

Fred

Found what he was looking for

He may have actually made it to India instead of making a wrong turn to the Americas.

Longitude

Hi Ihop47, Yes, the book is better than the movie.
The book title is Longitude and was written by Dava Sobel, an American. The book tells the story of John Harrison (another Yorkshire man) and his struggle to make an accurate time piece. He eventually succeeds but then has to wait years to get his just reward.
Longitude was a big problem. It could be worked out by star observation and various calculations but only a few people ever really mastered the process.
The old sailing ships were always over manned because a failure to make a timely landfall led to disease and a high mortality rate.
So, I think the question should be
`What if Columbus had an accurate clock`. grin

He would have needed some marine charts - wonder who he'd call to get them?
