Forum Setup

I cannot figure out how to get to the last message of a very long post without having to go to the next page and scrolling to the bottom. Let me explain: If, say, a post has 90 replies and when I logon it shows that there are 5 new ones since the last time I looked. If I click on 5 new it just takes me to the first page.
So, how can I just see the 5 new ones? I am sure there is a way and I just cannot figure it out...

That's how you have to do it

That's how you have to do it.

If there are multiple pages you can select the last one and then scroll to the last post instead of each page in order.

There should be a better way to get to the new forums. I agree you should be able to see the last 5 or so, not the whole page. Maybe Miss POI might be able to fix this.

Have you tried using "unread posts"?

When you get to a thread using the "unread posts" link - rather than the "recent posts" link - you are taken to the last unread post in that thread.

It may take you a while to walk thru posts (of course you can "skip" them just to make the fact that you have taken action of that particular thread)

Another option is to start from right now by clicking on the "Mark topics in ALL FORUMS as read" option at the bottom left of the "unread posts" screen.

Works for me

Yup, what I do is start with "Unread posts," then read the various posts of interest to me, and finally do a "Mark topics in all forums as read." That way, I always see only new posts each time I visit.

The only time I have to wade through old posts is when a do a "search" for a specific word combo to bring back something I want to read again. Search brings up the thread (but takes me to the beginning of the thread) in which my search words appears but it's not fun wading through a 9-page thread looking for a specific reply.

Thats all very well, but

it sure is cumbersome. I guess I will just try the suggestions provided. Thanks for your help...

it is easy and works just as you say you want

Log in and use the unread posts link, it will take you directly to the new posts. My only negative feedback on this feature is that there is no good way to permanently express a lack of interest in a topic. If one clicks the skip link, saying that they want to skip the topic and consider all new posts "read", the system still insists on showing you the thread again when there are more posts. I'm not sure why it would think I was now interested in posts in the thread if I previously was not. My wish would be for either the skip link to flag the thread as one that I am not interested in, or to provide an extra link to permanently skip the topic.

Also be sure to click the Forum Preferences link directly under "Unread Form Posts" to hide any forum you are not interested in.

Unread posts link doesn't always work for me

For me, this only works on threads that are a single page. For multiple page threads clicking the unread posts link just takes me to the opening page of the thread.

2nd page yet?

2nd page yet? smile

When I go to unread posts, if there are 2 or more pages, it takes me to the first unread post, where ever that is. If it is on a second or later page, the lead item is the first one of the entire thread, but it is then followed by the first unread thread.
I also have my preferences set to hide those forums I am not interested in. Seems to work for me.

Same here. That was a bit confusing at first. Initial thread post at the top of all pages.

If you are going in ...

If you are going in through "unread posts" instead of "recent posts", you should be taken to the first post in that thread that YOU have not yet read.

That post will have the word "new" in the upper right corner (as will all the posts in the thread below that one).

Let's assume that all you did was read that thread (but did not "reply" or "quote" to it. Once you back out of that thread, it no longer appears in YOUR list of unread posts. Only when someone else makes a new post will it again appear in YOUR "unread posts".

It is entirely possible for you to find NEW posts that start on a page other than page one - but my experience is that I am always taken to the first "new" post that i have not read.

Ok, I see, but...

Ok, I see how it works IF you use the Unread Posts function. However, when you browse the forums in the more traditional way -- > Discussion > (choose forum) -- the "New" link doesn't work properly.

When you browse this way, under the total number of posts for each thread is the number of new posts since last visit. Clicking the "x New" link should take you to the first new post, but that only seems to work on single page threads. On multi-page threads it just takes you to the top of the opening page.

Aha

You have me here. I did not understand what you are doing but tried it. In my case I clicked on
Discussion (upper right corner).

Then I chose the forum "Garmin Talk" in which I knew there would be thread with pages of posts.

I found "Garmin 3790T" which has 78 posts, 2 of which new. When I clicked on the "2 new" I expected to be taken to them but was not.

I scrolled to the second page and found the 2 new items - they were both a response to a post from me as it turns out.

What you have discovered is a "bug". Shame on me for not more quickly seeing what the problem was. I just never thought about getting to the unread posts in that manner.

Yup, that's the problem

We're always taken to the first page if it's a multipages thread. What I normally do is remember how many "new" posts before clicking the link. Then I click the last page, hit End key on the keyboard and start counting back grin

What makes it more difficult to find the new posts is the fact that the new ones aren't marked as "New" anymore when you get to the correct page.

Btw, I just found out what you're talking about (unread posts) smile It'd be nice if it works the same way when we click the new posts link (__ new).
