nuvi 1490T computer connection

Has something changed with some recent firmware update, or do I have an impending problem?

Up until recently I could plug the 1490T into the computer starting with the unit off. It would boot up into file transfer mode. Now if I plug it in with the unit off, the Garmin screen flashes up, turns off and continues with the on off cycle infinitum.

Everything works ok if I turn the GPS on before plugging it in.

One of my principal reasons for concern is that the last time I used it for navigation, the GPS froze and to get it going again required quite an effort. The total distance of the trip was only 25 miles. On the way home, I did not have it in navigation mode and it froze up again.

When I got home I did a master reset. After that is when I first noticed that I had to turn the GPS on before plugging it in.

Its kind of critical at this time because we are leaving for France in a few weeks and will be dependent upon it.

Try this

I would run the web updater and see if all is well with the files on the unit and to make extra sure run the MyGarmin updater on their web site. There is a test procedure that they ask you to do after the update of any files or software from their site and this confirms if everything has been installed.
One other point, make sure the Nuvi has a good charge in it's battery before you attempt any updates. Good luck.

Thanks

Yeah, after the master reset I went on line and reinstalled the same version of the firmware.

I'd still like to know from the owner of another 1490T whether or not I am experiencing abnormal operation. Other than that it appears to be functioning properly.

Here is what I do....

I plug the cable into the unit while it is off...then plug it into the computer and it goes into the charging computer mode.

When it is on I plug it into the back of the unit and then into the computer and it goes into the charging computer mode.

In other words it always goes into the computer mode. Try plugging the cable into the unit and then the computer...

I have not experienced what you are having it do.

Thanks for the information.

Thanks for the information. I tried connecting the cable to the GPS first and got the same results.

Think that I'll be contacting Garmin. I'm just nervous about it failing on a three week trip. Otherwise I'd just continue to use it until it fails.
