Anyone using POI proximity alerts with Garmin Topo 2008?

POI proximity alerts work fine in my Nuvi 750 as long as I am in the City Navigator mode. I also have Garmin Topo 2008 installed, and when I turn off City Navigator to go into the Topo mode I no longer get POI proximity alerts. Any idea why, or what can I do?
Thanks
.
Since the Garmin alerts function as an "along the road" alert and since the TOPO 2008 maps are not routable, it would make sense that you would not get alerts with these maps active.
off-road POIs
Thanks for your reply. Yes, I agree with the logic, however I have read many POI discussions about using alerts that are off the road. No one has mentioned that POI alerts only work in City Navigator, so I'm wondering if there's some kind of trick I'm missing.

Are you perhaps thinking of a TourGuide-style proximity alert, i.e. radius alert?

POI proximity alerts only work in City Navigator
Hi. These are waypoints that I created in MapSource (setting the proximity distance there) and then exported and saved as gpx files. Then I loaded them as POIs into my GPS with POI Loader. When I pull the gpx back into MapSourse they have circles around them indicating the alert distance. Not sure of the difference between a "TourGuide-style" proximity alert and the kind I'm using, but what I have created work just fine in City Navigator ... but not Topo USA.
Interesting that internal waypoints work in the Topo USA mode as well as City Navigator mode, but not POIs. Also, off-road POIs alert just fine in City Navigator, so they don't seem to be linked in any way to the routable vs non-routable issue.
Thanks for any help or explanation you can offer.
