Garmin nüvi 295W Wi-Fi - $149.00

This is a great deal with the Wi-Fi features for $149 shipped

I just ordered one this morning, couldn't resist the Gold Box deal at Amazon. Used my Amazon.com card and got another 5% cash back so ended up at $142.49 including shipping.

The Garmin nüvi 295W Wi-Fi Portable GPS Navigator has a lot to offer. Very nice features and basically a Nuviphone G60 without the phone. Also has user replaceable battery.

Great to use when traveling or walking around a city and need to google something or quickly check a web site and pick up or send email.

"Wi-Fi connectivity on the nüvi 295W provides a full desktop web experience with an HTML browser so you can surf the web whenever and wherever you choose¹. Check and send e-mail, including Hotmail®, G-mail®, AOL® mail, POP3 and IMAP, and view email attachments of Microsoft® Word, Excel®, PowerPoint®, PDF and JPG files. You can also search an abundance of customer-rated points of interest (POIs), such as restaurants, hotels and more, using Google™ Local Search."

295W

I would get one if it had Lane Assist. It is too bad Garmin didn't include that feature.

Also too bad

Also too bad it has a small 3.5" screen. Might be OK when you need the portability of a phone, but for a driving GPS and a mobile internet solution (its two primary functions) 3.5" is just too small...

Love Mine

I use mine a lot, like the WI-FI and weather, also has Google search, be sure to read instructions first. It's in walking mode tell you mount it on cradle, then switches to driving mode.

Would have bought one if it were Garminfone

I am waiting for a garminfone.

This offer has expired

Trying to preempt, probably futilely, posts complaining: "Hey, I can't get that deal any more. Now this GPS costs a lot more."

That's right. It was an amazon Gold Box Deal of the Day, good only July 19, 2010. It has now expired.

I realize you're kidding, but this deal reminds me that if you can get a good new GPS for $150, I'm thinking lifetime maps don't make a lot of sense. These units are going to become razor-blade-type disposable commodities. If your maps are out of date, get a new GPS with new maps. Forget the updates.

I was tempted

The price seemed good, but I didn't quite get the WiFi appeal. I have an ipod touch already so it didn't seem like this added anything. Am I missing something?

Some of the features would be redundant

Some of the features would be redundant with you already having the ipod touch. I do not have the ipod so it had some features like the Wi-Fi I could use and do not have now plus it had the Garmin navigation system and capabilities I like and are familiar with already.

My main Garmin system is built into my car with a 7" touchscreen but I could use something when I'm out of my car or in a rental plus it is a good backup just in case.

I will post a little critique on it after I have had a chance to play with it for a while.

Lacking features

It's lacking features: Lane assist and 3D Building display. Also the screen resolution is low compare to the new Garmin 3700 series. I'm sure the next 3700x or 3800 series of Garmin will have wifi builtin and google search, may be google earth included.

Or

And for those who don't have a Touch?

Some (most) of us don't have an Ipod Touch, so... I assume you see the appeal in the Touch's WiFi, so why wouldn't WiFi have the same appeal if it was added to other devices?

Would love to see a Garmin version of this

Mio Moov V780

http://www.mio.com/miocebit2010/MoovV780.html

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/04/mios-tegra-powered-moov-v...

I'd prefer an Android base over Windows CE and would be quite satisfied with a 5" screen, but this type of device looks pretty intriguing for those of us who don't want/need smartphones.

Garmin's Answer To The Mio Moov V780

I would like to see a Garmin version of that, also. Maybe a bigger version of a Garminfone with a larger screen. For the US market we will need ATSC-M/H, of course.

Good Find

Good price. Too bad I missed it.

so far I have to say I'm very pleased with the new 295W

I bought one last Monday on the $149 Gold Box deal and so far I have to say I'm very pleased.

Things that I really like and I'm impressed with:

Wi-Fi was easy to set up even with WEP security enabled network and once a location is set up it automatically logs in when you are in that wi-fi area the next time.

Email account setup with Gmail account amounted to just entering the email address and password the unit knew the rest of the settings

Build quality is very good and feels solid and touch screen is accurate and responsive.

Software is very intuitive and updates and custom POI's are done just like any other Nuvi.

The web browser is slow but functions and was easy to enter and log on to websites using password and username entry boxes.

Screen is smaller than my old 885T but still no problem reading it in the car and very clear display.

The "Panoramio Photos" function under where to menu is cool and when you go on it connects with wi-fi and shows photos people have posted that are near your present location. If you see something shown you would like to see you just hit save and it now shows up in your favorites under photos category and you just select it and hit go and it takes you to the location where the photo was taken.

Must say so far very pleased and glad I bought it and should come in handy in a lot of situations especially when traveling! grin

Does it support only WEP (considered broken and worthless), or does it also support WPA security?

It supports any secured network that you have the password for

It supports any secured network that you have the password for. Just so happened the one I tested it with was WEP so I know first hand that it worked with WEP. It does not list any network security type limitations.
