Touch Screen Failure

Over the past few weeks, the touch screen on my Nuvi 255 stops responding. I notice this happening when the device was warmer such as being mounted on the windscreen and plugged in. Now it does it almost all of the time. I tried reloading the firmware, a hard reset, but that has not worked. Garmin suggested I exchange it and since I just loaded a lifetime map into it they would do it for free. I just don't want to lose all of my favouries I loaded over the past year. Does anyone know where the favourites are stored? Can they be transfered to my computer and back to another unit?

Copy current favs

Hook your GPS up to your computer and look for the GPS folder on the GPS, inside that folder look for and make copy of current.gpx file to your computer. When you get your new GPS reverse the steps.

One additional step and correction

The folder you are looking for is GPX and is found nested within the Garmin folder on the nüvi. As stated above, copy Current.gpx to your PC.

When you copy Current.gpx back to the new nüvi, (important) rename it as Temp.gpx, then power cycle the nüvi. This will copy your Favorites to a hidden location and then create a new shadow copy named Current.gpx. At that point it wouldn't hurt to delete the Temp.gpx

One advantage to keeping temp.gpx intact on the unit is that you won't lose your favorites when a hard reset is performed. After the hard reset, the favorites contained in temp.gpx are simply reloaded into the unit. Note this will only restore the favorites that were contained in temp.gpx and not any newer saved favorites since the temp.gpx file was created.

Garmin Road Trip

With Garmin Road Yrip you can move your favorites to and from your computer and GPS. I think I got it with my Vista Hcx but it works with the NUVI's as well.
