Update After Using Google Satellite Nav on the Motorola Droid

Well I can update info on the Google Sat Nav on the Motorola Droid. My wife and I just returned from a trip to Florida. Now first I love the Motorola Droid phone from Verizon. It is a great smart phone and I would get another one with no problem. I had posted some info on the Google Sat Nav back in Nov 2009. Now note the Google Sat Nav is in Beta and is not the final product. I'm sure they will improve, etc. I want in this posting to update after using it in an actual trip. All was working fine till we got to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The Droid using Google Sat Nav routed us off Rt 79 down Rt 279 into downtown Pittsburgh. I wanted to see what the program was up to so I went with the maneuver. The program seemed to be lost at this point. It seemed to be sending us in circles. I pulled over and pulled out a map and found our way back to the highway. At this point I lost confidence and trust for the current program. Again it is in beta at this time and I'm sure it will improve. I made the mistake of not taking my Garmin Nuvi 750 with us. My wife downloaded Verizon's VZ Navigator which now became our GPS for the remainder of the trip. Also something I did not figure on was that on a few occasions we got into an area where data usage would have been roaming which would have been costly. I have the preference set to keep the Droid from using this while roaming so as to prevent the added costs.
At this point I would have used the Co-Pilot Live GPS that I downloaded to the SD card in the phone but Motorola just before our trip sent updates which caused to Co-Pilot to be scrambled. The issue can be fixed I found out later by going on a PC and going into the program and fixing it. Also after speaking with Motorola they are working on a fix also.
Bottom line I will not leave for another trip without having my Garmin on-board.
Also I missed the great features that the Garmins have and the screen size.

When it comes to GPSr/PDA-Cellphones... the jack of all trades is a master of none. I've gotten by on Google Maps & VZ-Nav on my Blackberry - neither are as good as my Nuvi 765t.

So true

You are right kch50428, I have a HTC Hero Android phone and it can be used as a stand alone GPS using the installed Google maps. It works, but only just. It is no where near as good as my Nuvi's plus the display is to small for most auto use.

Only Garmin is a Garmin

Thanks for the review. I will stick with my 2 year old 260 and get to my destination without a problem.

The roaming cost could be

The roaming cost could be quite an issue. What would happen if you were to take this unit to Europe? Could you pop in a pay as you go SIM card over there?

That I don't know. You would have to check with Verizon.

VZW's Motorola Droid is not GSM Capable.

Since this posting Google Map Nav has improved quite a bit. There are many great features that make it a very good and very usable GPS. With all that said, I still will not leave without my Garmin. You can't beat a standalone GPS.
