GPS CORRUPTED DURING DOWNLOAD OF REST AREA POIS

On my first try of loading new POIs into my Garmin, the unit crashed. I cannot turn it off and the computer will not recognize it. It thinks it's still connected via the USB cable. Any ideas on how to unlock it?

Power switch

Disconnect the USB cable and try holding the power switch for 30 seconds or so to see if you can get it to shut off. If that doesn;t work, call Garmin.

Garmin Type?

It would help if you told us what type of Garmin you were trouble with. On some removing the battery is the only way to reset. On others you use the switch, as described in other posts.
I suggest you put the make and type in your signature.

nuvi 855. Life is not fair. I don't care who told you it is.

Garmin SP C530

acording to profile.

8XX units "Cold Boot"

On the 8XX units removing the battery does a "Cold Boot" in that the O/S is wiped and reloaded which is different from a hard reset which does wipe the user data. They're similar in their function, but we 8XX users get to keep our data. We can do a reset which does wipe the data but that is usually after a cold boot doesn't fix the problem. Holding the power switch in the off position for about 10-15 seconds also forces a cold boot - at least on my 885 - and that is so much easier when it freezes while traveling.

How did you load the POI file?

We have a C550 and have loaded custom POI's many times with no problem ever.

How did you load the POI file? Did you do anything else when you first connected the USB cable and the computer recognized the GPS?

model

Hi, I'm new to this so please excuse. The model is a c530. I did get it fixed by letting the battery run down overnight. I could then load the POI's from the same file that I got the error message on before. I also found that if I did a hard off before disconnecting from the computer the system would work. If I didn't the Garmin would crash again and I wold need another night to discharge the battery. This was new as I have downloaded updates without hassle.

thanks for trying to help. The rest areas appear to be in.
