Chile Quake

Thoughts with those in Chile, hoping for the best for those in Hawaii...

I have friends that live on the coast in Hawaii. They have been evacuated to higher ground. They will be OK but don't know about the house. In another hour or so we should know.

Hope everything goes well for them and all over there. Let us know.

I guess it was a good thing it was off the coast...8.8 is a whopper. Haven't heard of one that big in a while.

As you probably know, we no longer use the old Richter Scale. The intensity of an earthquake now includes the area affected in the calculation. Haiti was a 7.0 but it was extremely violent in a very small area, basically the capital city, and was a fault slippage quake.

The Chile quake was an 8.8 meaning it was about 800 times as energetic as the Haiti quake but was a plate subduction earthquake resulting in uplift, and covered a much larger area, so it was far less violent in any one place.

We have friends in Santiago & Colina (10 miles north) & hope they got thru ok.

Well reading the news it looks like Hawaii may miss the brunt of it. Thats goood.

Hawaii was fortunately okay. I've a brother and his family there. As for Chile, I hope death toll isn't too high.

Earthquakes - Snow & bitter cold in a lot of the US this Winter season. Wow, and the year has just started.

Hope it is not as bad as the 8.8 implies.
