Is there any way to remove or stop outdated POIs that come with the GPS from showing up in the POI search?

No there is no way to change
No there is no way to change the internal pois that came installed on the unit.You may want to report the outdated pois to get a change on future map updates.See https://my.garmin.com/mapErrors/report.faces or see http://navteq.com/.

Thats why we use custom POI's, for there accuracy!
