map update with multiple garmins

Is there a way not to have the download of maps 2010 from garmin downloaded for each nuvi? The download time is at least 2 hours and who wants to spend their life waiting for downloads. We have the file of 2.02g and have other life time cards, but would like to not have to down load the map for each nuvi

Doesn't

Doesn't each card have it's own unlock/activation code? If so one download should be all you need. Then use that file for each of your Nuvi updates and supply the proper unlock/activation code for each one.

multiple garmins

It did ask for the code on the one I am loading now, but did not know if all I had to do is give the other code when I tried to download others.
Thanks

Yes.

There is a way to update multiple nuvi's without redownloading. There is a discussion about this over at the GPS Review forum. Just Google this expression "same map set, multiple Nuvi" and you will find it.

Yes - I do it all the time; all you need to do is download it once. Usually store it on your desktop for installation purposes.

Make sure the unit you want to update is plugged into your PC and you are logged into your myGarmin account.

Obtain the 8 digit alphanumeric product key:

- for nuMaps Lifetime: this can be obtained by logging onto your myGarmin account from the myMaps-> Manage Maps link. Select the details link for the unit that you are updating.
- for nuMaps onetime: follow all of the registration instructions - when you reach the download link it will give you the product code (you do not have to re-download it)

When you run the application file - it will ask you for the 8 digit alphanumeric product key - just enter the code associated with the download.

If it is already installed on your PC, it will allow you to skip the PC installation and install the update directly to your GPSr.

Hope this helps - wink

Jroz: Not sure if I understand what you're saying here..

My situation is:
I have a Nuvi 205 with an outdated map.
I just purchased a new 1250T & my understanding is that with the purchase, I get one map update. I have 60 days from the date of registering the GPS - or powering it up and locking into satellites.
My question is:
When I go to update the map on my 1250T is there a way to get the map update into my Nuvi 205 as well, without having to pay for a map update?

Sorry

Not possible. One map update per Nuvi. What we are discussing here is if you have purchased updates for all your devices do you have to download a separate map file for each. The answer is no you only need to download once but you do need to have purchased either the one time or the lifetime update program for each unit.

The only free update is the one timer within the first 60 days, as you know. That update will only work on the Nuvi it was downloaded for. In your case that is the 1250T

That was my guess..

Thanks for the quick reply.
One last question:
How do I know when Garmin updates their maps? i.e. I don't want to make the mistake of updating the US map in my 1250T to find that Garmin released a new map update a week later.

Well, you can sign up for Garmin emails regarding map updates--but history shows this a very sporadic notice and Garmin usually fails to alert you before you've found out about the map from other sources.

The best way to check for new updates is to check here on POI Factory. It's almost a guarantee that you'll read here first of new firmware updates for your GPS and for new map availability, at least for North American maps.

That being said, for the past year or more, new maps come out about every 3 months, so May 2010 will be a good time to expect the new (2011.00?/2011.10?) map.

Given that your nuvi is such a new model, you may want to consider buying numaps lifetime updates for your unit. For under $100, you'll get up to four updates a year for the life of your GPS:

All of the previous mentions will inform you. You can also know by logging onto your myGarmin account from the myMaps-> Manage Maps link and it will let you know if an update is available. The 1690 will let you know in Tools->myGarmin with an update message.
