New 255W owner also own C320. Hate 255W speaker sound. Hard to hear

I mount my GPS in the upper storage hole in the dash. 2005 Altima. The C320 sounded great. I have my new 255W mounted in the same place. Volume is at 80 and I can hardly hear it. Cranking it up more causes distortion out of that tiny speaker.
I was thinking of
1. Taking it back for a model that has an ext spkr jack. 2. Building an amplifier using a mike stuck to the rear near the speaker.
3.Cracking it open and installing a jack myself.
Has anyone had their 255W apart? If so , is there room for a jack and how did you get it open.
Which models come with a external speaker jack ?
Will the amplifier with mike just amplify ALL cabin noises ?

Im a 255W owner and no problems

I also have a 255W and i have no problems with the voice or volume. I think its pretty loud enough to hear while i have the radio on at a moderate volume level. I mount mine on the windshield and have no problems with the sound. Lots of people have complained about the voice also being to robotic, but i dont think its that bad at all. As for taking the unit apart and installing a new jack, i think that would be a big mistake and you would void any or all warranty and you will be even more stressed than you are now. Just take it back and get a gps that has the options your looking for.

Not sure if this will help

Not sure if this will help the op problem but you can try TTSVoiceEditor http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/TTSVoiceEditor .It not only allows you to change some of the phrases but has listed under voice parameters settings for volume and rate. Some users reported by changing the rate some improvement.

Also http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/ontheroad/voicestud... for your own voice.
