The nuvi 855 and maybe all 8x5 series has new firmware, version 4.70 dated December 28, 2009.
Changes made from version 4.60 to 4.70:
•General stability fixes.
•Resolved issue where scrolling through map in dense area may cause street labels to not be displayed.
•Resolved issue with unit converter precision and rounding.
•Fixed issue where roundabout turn icon occasionally drew at an incorrect angle.
•Fixed issue with Arabic street names not displaying.
•Resolved issue where searching near route could cause device to freeze/restart.
•Resolved issue with several foreign languages not displaying full name of streets in map view.
•Fixed loss of audio with Bluetooth and FM transmitter.
•Now capable of reading files (maps, etc) larger than 2GB.
•Resolved issue causing European devices not to be seen by WebUpdater or other Garmin software.

I noticed that there was a improved more informative display of what was happening during the time the unit itself was actually doing the firmware update procedure.

I updated my 855 with 4.70
I updated my 855 with 4.70 and I'm now having a problem with the voice recognition. The "Where To" command works, but when I try to use "favorites" or "extras" command, I get the double beep when a command is not recognized and nothing else happens. Anyone else having this issue? I did the reset by removing the battery, still no luck.
Update: I did the hard reset clearing everything and it seems to be working now.

What exact hard reset procedure did you use?

8x5 hard reset
This is the verified 8x5 hard reset procedure direct from Garmin:
nuvi 8x0/8x5 series hard reset:
To perform a master reset on a nuvi 800 or 805 series device:
1. Remove battery from nüvi
2. Place battery back into nüvi
3. Touch-and-hold the bottom right corner of the touch screen when a progress
bar appears
4. Release the screen when "Do you really want to erase all user data?"
appears
5. Touch "Yes"
The device will now be reset.
*Note: The master reset will erase all user data including saved favorites.
If possible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for
about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.

Because of the weather and location of my 855 on the dash, I use the voice command almost exclusively and have not had the same experience. I just wish I could say the word "YES" they way the expect it. But I have had that issue since I got my unit regardless of the update.
