First off; I'm completely new to Garmin and car-GPS in general.
I have just downloaded the free map update from Garmin: When I'm about to install it, the software tells me that there are too little space on the GPS, thus I have to choose which parts of Europe I want installed. However, I have installed a SDHC 8gb in the GPS, so I don't see why it would be too little space.
As a side-note I can say that the Garmin web application doesn't seem to discover the SDHC card; according to the web application, there are only 15mb unused space on the GPS.
What should I do?
Clean out the unused files
The first thing you should do is make a backup of all the files on your unit. You can copy them to the PC using the same file structure.
Next go into the folders and delete all the unused voice, text, and help files for the languages you won't use. Also delete all the vehicles you won't use. You should have enough room then to do the map update.
As to the SD card - it has to mimic the Garmin structure. It must have a Garmin folder with POI, GPX, and MEDIA as it's subfolders at a minimum. Only supplemental maps can be run from an SD card. Your unit's base map must be resident in the main unit storage.

I see. Is it possible to install the rest of europe on the SDHC card as supplementary maps?
The fact the Garmin isn't
The fact the Garmin isn't recognizing the card at all tells me that the 265W doesn't support SDHC. Switch the card you're using out with a 4GB or smaller card and see if the GPS recognizes it. If the GPS does, then that is your answer. If it doesn't, there's a malfunction with the GPS.
In answer to your other question, whatever maps don't fit on the GPS itself can be put on the SD card. This is how I do it whenever I update the maps in my 200W.

One other thing to try
Make sure the card is formatted to FAT 32, and also name the card i.e. Garmin. I had to do that to get the proper file structure, and to get the computer to recognize the card.

I totally forgot about the
I totally forgot about the fact the card itself could have been formatted wrong.

Thank you all for the great
Thank you all for the great help. After all I found that the solution to my problem was to create the folders on the SDHC card, similar to the folder-structure on the GPS (ie. Garmin-->POI etc).
Now it is working very well.
