City only as destination

Garmin 255WT, how do I select just a "city" as a destination (no address) and I need to save that destination and name it just like an address so that I can just bring up the favorites-addresses, click on it and head 500 miles to that city, then click on the next city and go another 500 miles to that city, etc?
Thanks, Gene

Instead of pecking on the

Instead of pecking on the keyboard for each city use Google Maps to send to gps. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=37.0625,-95.677068&spn=57... .Just put the city in.Once it comes up and the gps is connected to your computer click on send and you will see gps select it.Follow the instructions. Then do the same thing for the next one.Since your unit can add categories for favorites just add one for cities and put all of them there. It will sort them by the closest to you.

You could also use excel and make a csv files for all of them.http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25743

Edit.To use Google to send to gps you will need to download http://www8.garmin.com/products/communicator/

Hmmmmm......

Sounds like you might be making it more complicated that it needs to be. You're GPS has all the cities. Couldn't you just search for the city, save it with the name you select?

Not quite......

No. This is a "feature" common to most (ALL ??)GPS units. They are not designed to "route" without a full address....or coordinates for those that support that.

A quick POI search in the destination city should give you a routable address OR guess at a couple of street names and put in a random address. I find that MAIN street usually works.

What is on Where-to screen

On my 765T City is an option on the second screen of Where-to. Even my old 76CSx can navigate to a city.

You can do it on the gps but

You can do it on the gps but as stated above a lot of pecking to get it done.Easier to do on Google maps.Touch where to,near,a different city,ok,type in city, done, touch correct city with state, touch cities icon, touch city and then save.

Charley

Why are you assuming they have access to a computer or smartphone where they can access Google and then hook up the GPS to do a send? Why not use the cities feature of the Where To screens? I've often used the cities feature to begin a route (and yes, they can be set as a destination). Using cities is a great way to set a via point if you want to get off the beaten track or find a back road.

Why do you assume they don't?To me that is the fastest way for what the poster asked.

Not in the OP

The OP asked "On the Garmin 255..."

City names remain in folder to the left of city entry line

If I remember correctly, after you search for city on 255, it is stored in folder (folder symbol to the left of the city entry bar at top).

This can save some typing for future city searches.

Save City

Once you find the city it can be saved like any other location with "save" tab. It is found in the favorites list when you select the "All Favorites" option.

City only as destination

On my 660 you just select where to then, city, select the city you want or spell it if it isn;t there then done. it will then let you see it on the map or select go and it will set a course to it.

City Only

I'm assuming that you are taking a long trip. I would suggest that you use Extra POI Editor and create specific locations in the intermediate city. In this case, find a by pass road, such as I-465 to get you around Indianapolis and call it Indianapolis, etc. Choose a few key cities that are on the main highway route that you want to use. If you're taking I-75 or I-95 to go to Florida, pick cities on the route to force it to take you where you want.

Save it in a GPX file called Florida or something. When I went to Branson, MO, I made to files. One for southbound and one for North, since I took different routes both ways.
