Multitasking

Interesting research on multitasking from Science Friday (on NPR): http://www.sciencefriday.com/program/archives/200908282 (researchers from Stanford)

Certainly some potential tie-in to GPS usage in vehicles. More research remains to be done, but the general conclusions at this stage are that high multitaskers hurt their ability to perform.

I agree...

...multi-tasking is a great idea and hyped point, but it's not real. I'm a psychologist and do evaluations on people. Tiny distractions can impair attention and performance, and research has been documenting this for years. I think there's lots of carry over to fiddling with GPS' on the road.

Bottom line: driving is very dangerous, and anything but driving takes a toll on one's ability to attend to the road. Your driving behavior in the middle of a desert can be different than the middle of a congested downtown. But, it's still gambling. And the nature of gambling is that eventually you're guaranteed to lose.
