Article on CNN today (8/28/09) about maps you can create yourself and load onto your Garmin (a bit more effort for other brands).

www.openstreetmap.org I didn't see anywhere in the article giving the official name of the site. The site itself doen't give much information on how to send the maps to your device, but I may have missed it. Another site that I have used and had good luck with is www.gpsfiledepot.com I have only used it with my Etrex Venture, but it was relativly easy to do and there are tons of maps.
